President was all set for his event at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. He took some minutes run and a briefing with Intelligence in the morning. All this happened 16 minutes before United Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.
Conditions stormed everyone’s heart
Around 8.30 Am, The motorcade departed for school. Fleischer received a text from Brian Bravo Who was in White Office. The text alerted him about the news of a plane that flew into the twin towers. Shocked and scared with the news, the WH administration assumed it as an accident.
The President was in a meeting with the school principal and kids. He was then informed immediately by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove. Bush told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to sum up all information and provide all resources required to NY. Not knowing about the exact damage and lives lost. They all assumed it as a small plane would have gone off and hit the buildings. But later when the news of United Airlines Flight 175 has hit the South tower and killed all people on board and in the building around 9.30 Am was received by Fleischer, And was later confirmed by Brian Bravo. He at the moment understood this was a Terror attack.
President immediately moved towards the holding room where he watched the live coverage of the attack. And later his first public remarks were released from the school itself.Around 9.37 Am American Airlines Flight 77 that headed towards the west side of the Pentagon crashed. Another flight United Airlines Flight 93 took back control of the plane from hijackers and made a crash landing at 10:07 a.m. in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
While being on the plane it was hard for the President and the officials to communicate. Even the phone was not working well. All in Air Force One could only see the live footage. The plane finally landed Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, where additional information was collected by President and he addressed the nation for the first time.We also pay homage to the people who lost their lives in this terrible terror attack.
