A Remarkable Achievement of William Byron for his first ever win at the NASCAR Cup Series.
The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Field & Driver commenced on Saturday 29th August at Daytona International Speedway in the regular season finale.
The Sunday’s race at Homestead -Miami Speedway was the 12th event of the revised Cup Schedule amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Only 14 races are left until the regular season ends on August 29 at Daytona International Speedway. There were 16 positions out of which 13 had already been claimed in advance of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, which means three spots were at disposal.

At Daytona, William Byron got the opportunity to win his career’s first ever NASCAR Cup race in overtime. Byron entered the playoff along with his teammate Jimmie Johnson, who missed the playoff in his season finale. It was the first time Johnson did not participate in the postseason.

Johnson who got caught in a wreck with two laps to go, he finished at 17th place even though he was pushed out of the playoff picture; Johnson is set to retire at the end of this season. On the other hand Bryon won his first NASCAR Cup Series.
The race had three contending position open for entering the championship. The first of which was claimed by Clint Bower who simply finished stage 1, Matt DiBenedetto took the lead and finished ahead of Johnson and Byron claimed his position by winning the race. Jason who had achieved seven titles with crew chief Chad Knaus, now in charge of Byron’s team.
Knaus shared his thoughts after kicking Johnson out of the playoffs, “I feel awful”. He further stated, “He shouldn’t be in this position, if it hadn’t been for COVID and him missing a race, he should have been solid in the playoffs and that hurts. I hate it for Jimmie. He’s one of my best friends”.
Jeff Gordon was joined by 22 years old William Byron, who is the only driver to win in the famous No. 24 car. Byron who is the 21st driver to win his first career Cup Series at Daytona and the 11th person to do the same in the summer race.
After the race Byron said, “It’s just a shot of adrenaline right into your arm” He continued, “It’s just an incredible feeling. I can’t describe winning a race in NASCAR. It’s been a while and so it’s just an awesome feeling”.
