Gladys Knight vs Patti LaBelle – The Battle
Viewers described this to be one of the most memorable and successful Verzuz battles yet. However, this one only had 14 rounds instead of the regular full-blown 20. Knight and LaBelle went back and forth delivering hits-over-hits to the audience. They both sang one song in each of the rounds except for the last two to three rounds, which featured about 4 songs combined.
When LaBelle sang If You Asked Me To, she remarked that Céline Dion’s recording took place after her version was released. In the same round, Knight encouraged people not to kill anyone as she sang License To Kill. Further, she performed Midnight to Georgia twice, on public demand.
Ultimately, Gladys Knight won 7 rounds while Patti LaBelle won 5. The other 2 rounds were a tie. In the end, both of them sang Superwoman together, and Dionne Warwick joined them. The 74-year-old artists, as well as the fans, enjoyed the event thoroughly!
For those who are unfamiliar with Verzuz, these events are like DJ battles, where artists play their hits one after the other. The winner of each round is decided by the public who are watching and judging them on social media. The Verzuz battles, launched by Timberland and Swizz Beats in March, have become prime-time entertaining during the on-going coronavirus pandemic. The previous battles including Brandy vs. Monica, Jill Scott vs. Erykah Badu, Teddy Riley vs. Babyface, DMX vs. Snoop Dogg, and Alicia Keys vs. John Legend drew millions of views and made this concept a bit hit.
