Landmarks Approves Revised Design For Building At Court And Congress

On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved plans to construct a new building on the current parking lot at 178 Court Street (at the corner of Congress Street).

The new building was designed by Sherida Paulsen and Robert Bianco of PKSB Architects. It will be two-stories-tall and rise 30 feet (39 feet to the top of the bulkhead). It is intended for up to two retail tenants.

When the project was presented in February, none of the commissioners had any objection to a two-story building at the site. It was the approach with which they had a problem. They felt that the windows were too big for a residential purpose, but the red brick wasn’t industrial enough for a commercial purpose.

The new design features brick that is more beige in color, plus more detailing. The elevator and stair bulkhead has also been made smaller to reduce visibility. This pleased LPC Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan, who said the design was “more true to what it is.” Ms. Paulsen wasn’t even required to finish her presentation and the new building was approved unanimously.

You can see the rest of the presentation below.
