Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California to airline pilot Philip Mickelson and former Navy aviator Mary Santos. He grew up in California, Scottsdale, Arizona. Mickelson has Sicilian, Swedish, and Portuguese ancestry. His maternal grandfather, Alfred Santos was a caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links and took Phil to play golf as a child.

Mickelson began golf under his father’s instruction before starting school, and he graduated from the University of San Diego High School in 1988.

Mickelson won his third major championship the following spring. He shot a final-round 3-under par to win by two shots over Tim Clark, taking home his second green jacket.

The Players Championship was won by Mickelson on May 13 with an 11-under 277 after he recovered from a shot back in the final round to record a three-under 69.

The Deutsche Bank Championship, the second FedEx Cup playoff match, was won by Mickelson on September 3, 2007.  Mickelson defeated Steve Stricker by one shot to win the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, his first victory on the 2009 tour.

For the second time in his career, Mickelson won The Tour Championship in September. On November 8, Mickelson defeated Ernie Els by one stroke to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

In 2010, Mickelson defeated Lee Westwood by three strokes to win the Masters Tournament on April 11 with a performance of 16 under par.  On April 3, Mickelson defeated Scott Verplank by three strokes to claim the Shell Houston Open title at 20 under par.

Mickelson rose to No. 3 in the world ranking, while Tiger Woods fell to No. 7. Woods had been ranked higher than Mickelson since the week before the 1997 Masters Tournament.
