At the hands of Jane Elizabeth Spaulding Carter and the late Robert Carter, Leslie Carter was born in Tampa, Florida as the third of five children (1952–2017). Her parents gave birth to her at the retirement home where they worked, Garden Villa. She was the older sibling of singer Aaron Carter (1987–2022) and his identical twin Angel Carter Conrad, and the older sister of BJ Carter and Nick Carter.  Leslie Carter married Mike Ashton on September 12, 2008, and the couple settled in Toronto, Ontario, where Carter gave birth to a daughter in 2011.

Like Wow!, her first album, was scheduled for release on April 10, 2001. Unfortunately, DreamWorks decided to scrap the movie later on. Carter collaborated with High Holy Days guitarist Dave Thompson to write her songs. Carter’s backing band The Other Half consisted of Mike Ashton, DJ Porter, Casey Clowater, Paul Davidson, and Dave Thompson, and they formed in late 2006.
