Early Life
The second son and third child of Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales Rubio, Marco Antonio Rubio was born in Miami, Florida. His parents immigrated to the US in 1956, two and a half years before Fidel Castro took power. His mother returned to Cuba at least four times after Castro’s takeover, including a month-long trip in 1961. In 1975, Rubio’s parents became U.S. citizens after applying for citizenship. Refugees included Rubio’s relatives.
Rubio’s maternal grandfather, Pedro Victor Garcia, legally immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 but returned to Cuba in 1959 to work. After leaving communist Cuba and coming back to the U.S. in 1962, he was detained as an undocumented immigrant. Later that day, immigration officials changed their minds. The order to deport Garcia was cancelled, and he was given “parolee” status. After the Cuban Adjustment Act was passed in 1966, Garcia was made a permanent resident. When Rubio was young, he was close to his grandfather.
Rubio’s claims that his parents left Cuba in 1959 after Fidel Castro took power were debunked by The Washington Post in October 2011. During Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship, his parents left Cuba in 1956. Florida’s Post reports that “being connected to the post-revolution exile community gives a politician cachet that could never be achieved by someone identified with the pre-Castro exodus, a group sometimes viewed with suspicion.” Rubio claimed that his family history statements were “family lore.”
In the 1960s, Rubio claimed his parents wanted to return to Cuba. He added that his mother took his two elder siblings back to Cuba in 1961 with the intention of living there permanently (his father remained in Miami “wrapping up the family’s matters”), but the nation’s move toward communism changed their plans. Rubio stated that the ” essence of my family story is why they came to America in the first place; and why they had to stay.”
Mario, Barbara, and Veronica are Rubio’s siblings (formerly married to entertainer Carlos Ponce). While living in Las Vegas, he and his family attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Nevada, his father was a bartender at Sam’s Town Hotel and his mother was a housekeeper at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino. After his first communion in 1984, he moved back to Miami with his family. He was married and confirmed Catholic.
In 1989, Rubio graduated from South Miami Senior High School. Before attending Santa Fe Community College (now Santa Fe College) in Gainesville, Florida, he played football at Tarkio College in Missouri. In 1993, he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Florida, and in 1996, he received a Juris Doctor. Rubio claimed $100,000 in student loans. In 2012, he repaid those loans.
