The Voice Season 22: When 20-year-old Yelka Sang “No Me Queda Mas” by Selena, Why Didn’t the Coaches Give Her a Thumbs Up?
On Monday, October 10, 2022, Season 22 of The Voice returned with another exciting episode. In the end, the Blind Auditions were over, and the Battle Rounds began. The coaches went back to their seats to finish assembling their squads, and they were Blake Shelton, John Legend, Camila Cabello, and Gwen Stefani.
With only a few open seats, the coaches had to be selective. Yelka was a contestant who tried out but didn’t make it to the chair round. She sang No Me Queda Mas by Selena, and she’s from Havanna. Her performance stumbled out of the gate, but she eventually picked it up, although not enough to get the coaches excited.
Because “I Was a Little Bit Bewildered,” the Coaches Didn’t Turn Around During Yelka’s Audition on The Voice Season 22, Episode 7!
Yelka was born in the United States, in San Diego. Her mom is Peruvian and her dad is Mexican. In search of greater possibilities, her parents uprooted and moved to the United States.
Yelka said that she had studied Spanish first before taking English classes before her audition. She continued by saying that she felt a strong connection to her heritage and culture. A singer from The Voice Season 22 said her parents encouraged her to pursue music.
The Voice participant sang “No Me Queda Mas” by Selena for her Blind Auditions. She spoke of her pride in being able to sing in Spanish and how the song was a wonderful reflection of her Latino ancestry. Even though the contestant gave a terrific performance, no one stood up to applaud.

One explanation is that they already have nearly full rosters and are only interested in participants who can perform flawlessly. According to Camila Cabello:
(“When I first heard the instrumentation, I was like, ‘alright, alright’ That got me really excited. I love that you’re representing our culture and there’s so much creativity and excitement and so many things to work within that. I think the reason why I didn’t turn around is that I’m looking for something that gives a little bit of a twist. What is going to set you apart and make it different as an artist.”)
Camila gave the example of Rosalia, a well-known flamenco singer, who has successfully fused flamenco with hip-hop. The Voice coach continued by saying that she was proud of Yelka for representing their culture and that she had a lot of potentials.
John Legend remarked on how lovely her tone was but explained that he was hesitant to turn around since he sensed she wasn’t confident in her vocal range. A few words from John:
After the performance, Blake Shelton admitted that he was a little confused but was relieved to hear Camila’s arguments because she thought they made sense. Yelka need to give it a shot the following season, the Voice coach continued.
