Jungle Season 1 Reviews
One of those arthouse films that will earn very mixed reviews is Jungle. Jungle sets high standards for itself right away with a subtitle like “a crime drama like nothing you’ve seen before,” and by doing so, it does itself a disservice. The show Jungle is a textbook example of style over substance since it tries way too hard to present an engaging and exciting story with its visuals and rapping. Even if the fourth wall breaks and neon-lit vistas are lovely to look at, this one pales in comparison to the grim atmosphere of films like Kidulthood or Top Boy.
It almost seems as though Junior Okoli and Chas Appeti, the project’s founders, wanted to create a rap version of Euphoria with all the intense imagery and social commentary. However, this one focuses on London’s streets rather than Gen Z. However, it’s not actually the UK in its traditional form. In an undefined time when neon ads are lit up on skyscrapers, Jungle is set in a near-future London. It’s a lot like Blade Runner 2077, but there isn’t nearly enough worldbuilding to make it worthwhile to explore. There are a few charming scenes in a diner where Marcus and Bianca choose products from a holographic menu, but the world is largely unexplored.
Instead, considering the rap music video vibe of this, it’s not surprising that it feels like an excuse to include as many neon lights as possible. The plot is essentially split in half, with the first three episodes focusing on one character and the final three episodes switching abruptly to another person. In the first three, Gogo, together with his sidekick Slim, attempts to make changes in his life by participating in one last daring theft. Unfortunately, when the security guy there is brutally murdered, everything goes wrong.

Gogo tries to avoid the inevitable as the guard’s gang, led by his brother 6ix, is bloodthirsty. The focus of the second half then shifts to a man named Marcus, who also aspires to make a fresh start and serve as a better example for his brother Danial. He has a murky background that comes back to haunt him in the end, which is made worse by his attraction to the talented and attractive Bianca. This narrative isn’t as compelling as the first, but both stories share the same creative vision that feels conflicted about whether to amaze its audience or truly convey a compelling tale.
Contrary to Top Boy, which featured several unexpected turns along the road, Jungle is much more focused on its eye-catching aesthetics and engaging cinematography. The jungle is rather unpolished on the outside, despite the wonderful intentions and Amazon’s merit for allowing such an artistic endeavor to proceed on their platform. It’s a controversial series with both strong and weak points. Originality can only take you so far, and Jungle attempts to reinvent the wheel in a harsh and arbitrary manner.
Who is Cast in the Jungle Season 1?
The mix of British acts and artists in Jungle’s rap and drill scenes is excellent. Gogo is portrayed by Ezra Elliot, famed for his work in Batman and Bulletproof, and Jessica is played by Nadia A’Rubea, a recent arrival. Along with M24, who plays 6iX, and J Fado, who plays Chap, Tinie Tempah performs as himself. Mia Mor$ is portrayed by IAMDDB, who had success with Shade in 2017.
Willow is portrayed by Jaykae, who was a part of Ed Sheeran and Stormzy’s Take Me Back to London remix. Additional UK artists who rock in Jungle include Big Narstie, Unknown T, Jordan McCann, Double Lz, and Bandakay. Danial is portrayed by Young Mattel Seyi, Bianca by AMARIA BB, Stacks by Koke, and Slim by RA.
