On August 3, 2022, Hulu will premiere the second season of Reservation Dogs, which will be available to stream there. The first two episodes will be made available on the same day, and after that, it is anticipated that the season will adhere to the weekly-release model; the season finale is scheduled to be made available on September 28, 2022. The Reservation Dogs seem to be doing well, yet the opening montage shows that everyone is stuck in a routine loop. Bear seems to be juggling several tasks and school, which is tiring him out. Elora cleans floors and who knows what else at a gas station. Cheese’s loop shows him eating granny’s home-cooked breakfasts. Everyone is in purgatory—not always unhappy, but not living their best lives (alright, possibly Cheese is considering that grandma-breakfast life is quite unsurpassable).

This routine is quickly broken when the history everyone is trying to bury returns to challenge them. Willie Jack delivers the letter to Daniel’s mum, who has now been jailed. Hotki (Lily Gladstone, Blackfeet, and Nez Perce) is locked in a loop as she tells another prisoner she’s living the same day over and over again. Hotki has a guardian ghost before Willie Jack arrives (played by Muscogee artist-actress-activist Tafv Sampson, who is the granddaughter of the late Will Sampson Jr.). Hotki stopped working to take her medication and neglected her obligations as a knowledge keeper.

The spirit also tells Hotki that many other spirits are present today, predicting something important. Hotki is a senior with strong ties to the forefathers, but she lost them recently (“Thought you were gone for good,” she tells the ghost) or during her captivity. Willie Jack reaches Hotki (with some assistance from the spirits). Hotki advises Willie Jack to bring an offering when seeking advice from someone. This can be medication or food. Willie Jack tells her auntie over a Skux energy drink, Cheez-Its, and Flaming Flamers that Elora and Bear’s tranquil façade is keeping the Rez Dogs apart, preventing them from resolving their problems and coming together.

There’s a lot to unload in this series, but I can’t emphasize enough how extreme it is to establish this spiritual intergenerational relationship in a jail. The scene shows that even when they fail, people like Hotki remain spiritual and important to our communities. Many people (Native and non-Native) perceive that inside as broken and in need of rehab to become “useful citizens” This incident shows that we must hold on to one other’s complicated humanity, even when we fail or do harm. That does not mean we lose who we are.

We’re not good or bad; we’re a spectrum of greys. Hotki has struggled and made poor choices, yet she’s a good knowledge keeper. Living in a good neighborhood doesn’t mean there’s no failure, argument, or review. A good neighborhood means everyone tries to be accountable, especially when they make mistakes.
