“I believe that as a group we have produced something that is the start of something that is going to be very remarkable. We are all anxious to get back to it and continue constructing those characters and building those ties. Luke Allen-Gale (The Borgias), Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Ready Player One), and Darrell D’Silva (Domina) all reprise their various roles within Van Der Valk’s team, and Emma Fielding (Years and Years) reprises her role as Julia Dahlman, the supervisor of the detective’s division.

Van Der Valk Season 2 Review

Women are still tumbling to their feet now that van Der Valk is back. It’s quite strange. Marc Warren, who remarkably resembles Malcolm McDowell, is a perfectly lovely man, but his persona can’t last more than a few minutes until gorgeous women start swarming around him. He was attempting to have a peaceful drink five minutes after this episode of Van Der Valk (ITV), which launched the second series of the remake.

Two attractive young women then approached his table and made advances toward him. Then a stunning blonde saved him from their grasp and quickly whisked him home for a night of sex. Morse probably never experienced this. The first season was constrained by the need to re-establish the character in our minds, so the plot had to remind us often that Van Der Valk was melancholy and lived on a boat. The program is better now that the cast has become acclimated and the burden of bringing back a well-known drama has subsided.

van der valk season 2 review

Along with his companion Lucienne (Maimie McCoy) and rookie officer Job Clovers, Van Der Valk has also softened a little toward his coworkers (Elliot Barnes-Worrell). Van Der Valk depends on instinct, whereas Cloovers employs his mind. Clovers frequently have lightbulb moments when he exclaims, “That’s it! I nailed it! The first episode of this three-part series featured a serial murderer with a deep knowledge of Amsterdam’s past. Calligraphy, windmills, and cryptic clues were all present (and wind turbines).

The first victim was a lawyer whose body was found hung up on a wind farm. The lawyer had won a case on behalf of the city to evict an artists’ colony, or a group of squatters, depending on your point of view. The bodies of murdered young ladies continue to give Van Der Valk a sickening preoccupation. There were two people here, both of whose bodies had an “X” carved into them as a form of body modification.

I didn’t need to see that horrifying scene (and when was the last time you saw the cameras pan over a male victim’s abdomen in the same way?). It’s a passable drama with a respectable cast, led by Darrell D’Silva as pathologist Hendrik Davie and Luke Allen-Gale as Brad, a sergeant who refers to suspects as “real nutjobs” and bodies as “stiffs.” However, nothing distinguishes Van Der Valk from other detective series; its only distinctive quality is its Amsterdam setting.
