Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 2 Reviews: Why Did Netflix Remove This Series?

When it comes to Rick and Morty, that is a major development.  During one season, the season opener was released several months before the rest of the episodes. An animated series with a stellar reputation, Rick and Morty was developed by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.

Rick and Morty is a masterpiece for a number of reasons, including its mystery characters, its travels through other dimensions, and its enthralling narrative. Because of this, all of the people who are already familiar with the series have been excitedly awaiting a new season. The good news is that Season 5 has finally arrived, and to tell you the truth, each and every scene of the opening episode was nothing less than outstanding. Furthermore, it elevated the stakes for the remaining episodes of the season.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Cast: Who’s Coming Back?

In the fifth season, every member of the series’ main voice cast is scheduled to appear again. This means that the show’s creator, Justin Roiland, will have his work cut out for him providing the voices of the title characters, Rick and Morty. Chris Parnell will play the position of Jerry, Sarah Chalke from Scrubs will take on the role of Beth (or a clone of Beth), and Spencer Grammer will round out the Smith family by playing the role of Summer.

Grammer expressed her satisfaction with the direction that Summer’s character was taking in an interview with Syfy Wire. “I can’t wait to see her take on more challenging tasks that require her own initiative. Perhaps you should take care of some responsibilities going forward.

After that, it’s possible that she’ll eventually hang up her boots. That sounds like a lot of fun; all she needs to do is take a break for a little while. She enjoys a moment of respite in which she can behave like a typical adolescent. That’d be a lovely thing to happen.” Roiland will undoubtedly voice Mr. Poopybutthole again as well, providing credence to the theory that our tiny yellow pal might possibly be a Morty from another dimension.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 2 Reviews

The fact that this series is supposed to have a gooey sitcom core underneath all the sci-fi craziness—and sitcoms often want you to care a lot about their characters—makes it strange on a basic storytelling level. You should experience emotional highs and lows while supporting them so that they might succeed. Simply put, you’re expected to adore them. One of those Rick and Morty episodes, “Mortyplicity,” shouts out loud and clear that you shouldn’t care about these guys’ personal life.

In a way, you’re supposed to appreciate them, but only as cynical, sci-fi comic vehicles that spew wisecracks. It’s difficult to invest in them as convincing representations of individuals on their own life paths, though, when the program essentially reminds you that it lacks a consistent protagonist. In episodes when it’s indicated Rick might be bringing home the wrong Jerry or Morty and that it doesn’t matter to him, the series has certainly experimented with this material previously.

Of course, there is also the whole cloned Beth controversy (which this episode calls back to a lot). However, I believe (and if I’m wrong, kindly correct me) that this is the first episode in which there is no explicit indication that viewers are following the exploits of a particular Rick, a particular Morty, or a particular member of the Smith family. The story revolves around Rick creating clones of the family as decoys. Through a quick heart-to-heart between Rick and Beth, the episode does deftly manage to cram in a tiny bit of that sentimental sitcom material (wearing Muppet costumes).

In a sweet moment, Rick apologizes and tells Beth he loves her after Beth persuasively asserts that if Rick cared about his family, he wouldn’t have been so neurotic as to clone them a gazillion times. The scene somewhat convincingly demonstrates that Rick and Morty can still elicit strong feelings from its viewers despite eschewing traditional protagonists in favor of a cast of Ricks and Smith dummies. (For characterization that is similar to this, see Meg Ryan’s roles in the 1990 film Joe Versus the Volcano.)

Since the decoys/clones are functional copies of the genuine Rick, some of the Rick clones/decoys mistakenly believe they are the actual Rick. As a result, they have produced more clones who have produced more decoys, and so on. We won’t get into why because it’s absurd and confusing on purpose, but the decoys have started murdering each other off. The fact that this is the only heartfelt scene in an episode that is primarily about the Smith family ruthlessly eliminating clones and snapping furiously at one other practically frequently, as is the norm for contemporary Rick and Morty, makes it just marginally plausible.

My favorite phrases were “Actually, I get hard guarding my family” and “We’re going to live in the woods like libertarians,” which made me smile a few times. Also rather endearing were the wooden puppet clones with the compressed audio voices. And because of how terrible it was, serial killer Rick in the style of Buffalo Bill was inspired.

However, “Mortyplicity” is ultimately one of those episodes, similar to “A Rickle in Time” or “One Crew over the Crewcoo’s Morty” that came before it, that is primarily invested in the growing complexity of its absurd sci-fi premise. Either you’re a fan like myself who prefers the sitcom-like characterization aspect of the series and will consequently find a lot less to latch onto, or you’ll like every second of the unrestrained violence and outrageous sci-fi shenanigans.
