Early Life

On September 18, 1945, at a US Army base in Cinderford, England, John David McAfee was born. His father is an American soldier stationed at the facility, and his mother is British.

McAfee was raised in the American city of Salem, Virginia. He has claimed that he feels equally at home in Britain and America. When McAfee was fifteen years old, his violent alcoholic father shot himself to death.

He studied at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1967. In 2008, he received an honorary Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree from the university.

Career

After graduating from college in 1968 and moving to New York City, McAfee worked at NASA’s Institute for Space Studies until 1970. He wrote the program during that time. After leaving NASA, he worked as a software designer for Univac before moving on to become an operating system architect at Xerox.

In 1978, McAfee then joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a software consultant. After that, between 1980 and 1982, he spent two years working with Booz Allen Hamilton. In the 1980s, McAfee created virus-fighting software while employed by Lockheed.

He was motivated to work on anti-virus software by a copy of the Brain computer virus. He started McAfee Associates, a business that specializes in antivirus software, a year after quitting his job. A couple of years later, in 1992, the corporation was incorporated in Delaware.

He stayed with the business for two more years before leaving in 1994. Two years after McAfee Associates went public, his stake in the company was sold for $100 million. In 1997, Network General and McAfee Associates merged to form Network Associates. Seven years later, the business adopted the McAfee, Inc. moniker.

The company was bought by Intel in August 2010. Up until January 2014, when Intel Security started marketing McAfee products under the moniker Intel Security, it had its own branding. In a joint venture with TPG Capital, Intel separated McAfee, Inc. from its parent company in 2017. The firm then changed its name to McAfee, LLC.
