1. The Dig

Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan), a landowner who recently lost her husband, makes the decision to look into the burial mounds at Sutton Hoo, which are located on her extensive estate in Suffolk, by herself. For her to be successful in this endeavor, she enlists the assistance of Basil Brown, an amateur archaeologist (Ralph Fiennes).

During his investigation, he and his coworkers discover riches, which ultimately result in a national call to action among prominent British historians. Edith’s private business is invaded by high-class excavators, and she defends Brown’s rights when the organization’s management seeks to remove him from his position.

The Dig is one of the most engaging historical dramas that Netflix has to offer, mostly as a result of its outstanding cast and gorgeous cinematography.

2. The Power of the Dog

The picture moves at a snail’s pace and only shows moments of sympathy in brief, measured glimpses; the rest of the time, the screen is filled with roughness, cruelty, and crudeness. In the award-contending film directed by Jane Campion and set in the 1920s in Montana, Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the role of Phil Burbank, a jaded and bitter rancher.

As soon as he sees his brother’s (Jesse Plemmons) new bride, Rose (also played by Jesse Plemmons), Phil develops an instant distaste for her (Kirsten Dunst). Her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), takes a disliking to him because he wants to protect his mother. This sets the scene for fascinating, subtle power maneuvers and dynamic shifts as the challenging new family attempts to settle in together.

The Power of the Dog, much like the rest of Jane Campion’s body of work, is full of stunning images and intimate looks into the frailty of the human condition. However, The Power of the Dog is also a challenging and at times abrasive examination of the repercussions of toxic exposure.

Even though it isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill neo-western in terms of standoffs or shootouts, the movie nonetheless manages to leave a strong impression on the viewer that seems to come at once.

3. Gunpowder Milkshake

Karen Gillan plays a dangerous assassin who goes on the run after refusing to kill a small girl in this high-octane, beautifully choreographed thriller. Gillan portrays the character as having a fast-paced and great choreography.

While on her way out of the secret organization to fulfill the terms of her contract, Gillan runs into an unexpected ally in the form of the mother she thought she had lost (who is portrayed by Lena Headey, who also stars in Game of Thrones).

She also encounters three formidable hitwomen (Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino). This film, which has an all-female cast and nonstop action, reimagines what it means to challenge patriarchal norms in cinematic form.

4. Tick, Tick… Boom!

Tick, Tick… Boom! is the long-awaited film adaptation of the play RENT, which was created by Jonathan Larson. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who directed Hamilton and In the Heights, will be in charge of directing the film.

A sorrowful story of fleeting creativity told by Larson is combined with the joys of performing in a theatre show to create a magnificent movie musical. It’s not just that Hamilton is all about capturing the beauty and tragedy of short-lived genius; it’s also that the Broadway polymath has been vocal about how Tick, Tick… Boom! influenced and inspired him as a creator, and he even starred in a production of the show a few years ago.

Even more amazing are the performances of Andrew Garfield as Larson, who sings and dances his way through the tension of perfection before absolutely breaking your heart. Garfield’s portrayal of Larson is one of the most impressive aspects of the film.

This movie is a moving testament to the people who openly embrace ambition and sincerely love the performance, and who believe that both of these qualities give them the power to change lives.

It doesn’t matter if you like the performances of Andrew Garfield, Lin Manuel Miranda, or Brie Larson, or if you just like the theatre in general; this movie is a moving testament to those people.

5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Unfortunately, the Holy Grail’s popularity has caused some of its luster to be lost over the years. When we hear the terms “flesh wound,” “ni!” or “huge swathes of land,” many of us now think of nerds repeating full scenes to us.

This is because of the popularity of the video game Final Fantasy. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that you find yourself reciting entire chapters to other people ignorantly and obsessively. If you wait a few years, get some distance from the oversaturation factor, and then watch the movie again, you might uncover fresh jokes that are just as funny and enjoyable as the old ones.

In point of fact, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the most jam-packed comedy in the history of the series. It’s amazing how fast we forget how many jokes there are in this movie, especially considering how well-known it is. If you’ve already seen the end product is a surreal and fascinating piece of cinematic work.

6. If Anything Happens I Love You

Director Michael Govier and writer-director Will McCormack team together to bring us If Anything Happens, an emotionally wrenching narrative of a family’s grief after a mass shooting at their child’s school.

To help viewers process the incident’s impact on their emotions, this short animated film begins in a dark and forgiving place before transforming into one of love, forgiveness, and hope as viewers learn to let go of the past and look forward to the future.

Although it’s not the most accessible picture on this list, it deserves praise for its emotional honesty and stunning visuals.

7. Space Sweepers

Set in 2092 and featuring Korea’s first big-budget space adventure, Space Sweepers follows The Victory, a salvage ship that collects space junk and sells it to the megacorporation that controls humankind’s final hope for survival: an orbiting space station high above the Earth’s polluted surface.

It all begins when the salvage crew discovers a young girl among their latest finds, setting off a dramatic journey in which they must battle great powers determined to shape the future of mankind.

9. Ravenous

While many Quebecers have been wiped off by a mystery virus, its victims have been transformed into howling, flesh-eating monsters. This is the beginning of Ravenous (originally called Les Affamés).

Despite the common concept, this isn’t a conventional zombie movie; it’s a deliberate-paced, eerily beautiful horror film. It is Bonin (Marc-Andre Grondin) who traverses the countryside in search of additional survivors and slaying zombies, and he is played by Marc-Andre Grondin. Unlike many other zombie films, this one offers each character sufficient growth as the gang expands so that they don’t feel like stock survivors Netflix!

Uncanny imagery, such as the zombies gathered around a shrine constructed of furniture, is commonly employed by Ravenous to create an eerie mood.
