You may breathe a little easier now that season four of the BBC One comedy Ghosts has been officially announced. (Unlike series two and three, which were both confirmed at the same time, there is no guarantee that there will be a fifth season).
Katy Wix, who plays Mary in the show, was the first to break the news of its renewal on the Distraction Pieces podcast. At a point in our conversation, Wix brought up the recent events in the news.
“Is it okay if I call them “ghosts”? Getting into trouble is the last thing I want to do. When things haven’t been announced, I’ve gotten into problems for announcing them anyhow. Beginning in the month of January,”

A familiar shot of Button house with the comment “Hello old thing” marked the start of filming for co-writer Jim Howick, who also plays Pat Butcher. The fourth series of rehearsals has begun.
During the announcement of the renewal, Ghost producers said: “Our fourth season at Button House is a dream come true. We’ve got a slew of fresh stories in the works and can’t wait to share them with you.”
Additional comments were made in a statement by Jon Petrie, the Director of Comedy “Series 4 of Button House has us eagerly anticipating our return. We’re thrilled to be working with the cast and creators of Ghosts and Monumental (Television), who never fail to create a prefect combination of enormous laughs and heart.”

When Can We Expect the Next Season of Ghosts?
Season 4 of Ghosts is expected to premiere on BBC1 in the fall of 2022, but no date has been set yet.
Filming is complete, which means the show will air sometime this year. Tweeted by Martha Howe-Douglas: “This season of #BBCGhosts is done! The programme wouldn’t be what it is today without our fantastic cast and staff. This is an honour and a privilege to be my job, and I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to when Button House reopens!”
I’m wrapped on S4 of #BBCGhosts! Huge thanks to our incredible cast & crew who work so tirelessly to make the show what it is. I feel very lucky to call this my job, and can’t wait for the doors of Button House to reopen to show you what we’ve been up to! 👻 pic.twitter.com/puYENrhT74

Cast of The fourth season of Ghosts
We should expect the typical core cast to return. As well as co-stars Lolly Adefope and Katy Wix, the cast features Mathew Baynton (Simon Farnaby), Simon Farnaby (Martha Howe-Douglas), Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard (Laurence Rickard), and Ben Willbond (Ben Willbond).
Button House owners Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who we can anticipate to return, are integral to the play. If Barclay and Bunny Beg-Chetwynde return to the neighbourhood, we’ll be delighted (Geoff McGivern and Sophie Thompson).
The story of Ghosts season 4
Lucy, Alison’s “long-lost” sister, was the central focus of season three. Lucy’s story begins to fall apart as Alison’s money is jeopardised, leading to a showdown in the finale. That plotline seems to be coming to a conclusion now. A variety of events, from community service projects to full-blown weddings, can be expected at Button House during the course of the next season, as Alison and Mike continue to host them.
Hopefully, we’ll get a better understanding of the lives of the ghosts as well (and, more importantly, deaths). From Robin’s life through Kitty’s death and more, there are still many personalities we have yet to investigate.
Ritchie told Digital Spy, ” “While we had a better understanding of Kitty’s past, we were left in the dark as to how she died. The Captain’s backstory has been revealed, but we still don’t know how he died. Seeing Mary’s death would be too gruesome, and I hope we never see it.”
According to Ghosts creator Laurence Rickard, the writing team has been collecting tale ideas, so there’s a lot to look forward to.
The fourth season is already hinted to by Matthew Baynton, who said to Digital Spy “Our knowledge of the secrets we have left is exciting, but we also know that once they are gone, it will be a shame.
“The audience is going to get to see what we’ve been working on, and we’re hoping it’s just as enjoyable for them. In the next series, there are a few more backstories.
One of the unexplained deaths is likely to be discovered, but there will be many more to investigate in the future.
