God of War 3 Ending Explanded: Who Is Kratos Wife?

God of War 3 was the most hyped PS3 exclusive game throughout the console’s lifetime. The original trilogy’s epic finish ended with a bang and a sorrowful ending, with Kratos ultimately sacrificing his life to rescue humanity from the gods’ tyranny. Of course, Kratos made his comeback in 2018 with God of War, and he’ll be back on PlayStation next year with God of War: Ragnarok. The next sequel is expected to be one of the most popular games of the year and a must-have title for both the PS4 and PS5.

While completing the story of Kratos and Atreus is most likely the goal, there are some details from God of War 3 that can be revealed. God of War never explained how Kratos survived what appeared to be a permanent death at the end of God of War 3, something Ragnarok may be able to do.

God of War III begins immediately after God of War II ends, with a rousing opening narration from Zeus detailing the activities of the rogue Kratos, who is ‘commanding’ a small army of Titans rescued from the Great War (using the power of the Fates). The Olympians rush to battle; Helios rides his chariot over Olympus, Hermes speeds down the very peaks of Olympus as Zeus watches,

Hercules receives the order to lead his troops down into the fray, Hades lunges off and engages several Titans in his giant form, and Poseidon (using his aquakinesis) shoots down from Olympus like a missile and delivers a death blow through Epimetheus’ chest, With Poseidon as their greatest threat in the battle, Kratos engages the God of the Sea, dragging him into Gaia’s clutches and managing to knock a weakened Poseidon out of his heavenly form and onto a separate level.

The two spar briefly before Kratos approaches and brutally beats the Lord of the Sea, eventually gouging out his eyes and shattering his neck before tossing him into the sea. The oceans erupt and ocean levels rise dramatically as a result of Poseidon’s death, unleashing a flood that appears to envelop the entire planet, destroying almost all of mankind except those on top of Olympia.

David Jaffe recounted his story to God of War III in an interview with GameTrailers.com. Oceanus, in his water form (akin to Poseidon’s God form), killed Hermes in the first sequence. Kratos would then face Zeus in the first boss fight and defeat him. The Egyptian and Norse Gods descend from Mt. Olympus through a doorway.

The Titans battle the Greek, Egyptian, and Norse Gods to see who will govern the world in the end. Kratos later learns the ability to teleport between Norway, Egypt, and Greece. In a boss battle, Kratos confronts Stheno and takes her head. Kratos then uses Stheno’s head to convert the beast into stone in another boss battle with the Sphinx (this is how the Sphinx statue we see today in Egypt came to be).

Kratos then learns that the only way to kill a God permanently is for mortals to stop believing in them. Because the Gods were concentrated on managing the universe and had their attention off the mortals, Kratos’ plan was already in effect. As a result, natural disasters struck the mortal world. The mortals lost faith in the Gods, causing them to become feeble.

The surviving Gods are killed by Kratos and the Titans. Kratos then slits his wrists with the Blades of Athena, sending him back to the Underworld to reunite with his wife and children. The last cutscene depicted the Three Wise Men on their way to the North Star, which resulted in the birth of Christianity.
