Cocaine Bear, directed by Elizabeth Banks, now has an official release date. Banks’ most recent film was Charlie’s Angels, which he directed in 2019, and Cocaine Bear is written by Jimmy Warden, who also wrote The Babysitter: Killer Queen. While criticism was mixed on both Angels and Queen, the picture is produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the geniuses behind the Lego movies. Lord and Miller have previously stated that Cocaine Bear will be insane, and if they say so, it’s a promising sign.cocaine bear

Cocaine Bear, a film starring Elizabeth Banks, will be released in theatres on February 24, 2023. The new drama is inspired by the unusual true story of a bear that overdosed on cocaine, but that’s not the craziest part. Andrew Carter Thornton II, a former paratrooper, lawyer, and police officer who became a cocaine smuggler, was discovered dead in a Knoxville, Tennessee, driveway. Thornton was armed to the teeth with a bulletproof vest and tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention 77 pounds of cocaine strapped to his waist in a duffel bag. The man’s parachute apparently failed as he dropped his jet, which was found 60 miles away.

The film is based on the true-life of Andrew Thornton and is set in Georgia. Thornton was a former narcotics officer who became a drug smuggler. His jet crashed in 1985, and a black bear ate a deadly amount of the plane’s cargo. Taking liberties, the film will follow an unusual group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teenagers as they gather in an Appalachian woodland to confront a drugged-up giant on a rampage that quickly spirals out of hand.

This brings us back to the unfortunate bear. Thornton’s 77 pounds of cocaine were apparently only half of what he had when he jumped out of the plane. The other half crashed in the woods near the plane’s path when the 175-pound black bear discovered and ate the stolen illegal substances. The bear was dubbed “Cocaine Bear” after news and circumstances of the incident were made public, and his narrative continued until he found a home at the Fun Mall in Kentucky.
