DC Extended Universe and other projects from 2017 to the present

In 2017, Heard appeared in Lake Bell’s indie comedy I Do… Until I Don’t as part of an ensemble cast, and she joined the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) cast as Mera,  Aquaman’s Atlantean Queen, in the superhero film Justice League. The following year, she reprised the role in Aquaman (2018), co-starring Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe and marking Heard’s first major role in a studio film. She has stated that one of the things that drew her to the role was Mera being “a strong, independent, self-possessed superhero in her own right, “who refuses to be referred to as Aquawoman rather than by her own name.  Aquaman went on to become the fifth most profitable release of 2018, as well as the most profitable DCEU installment to that point. Heard was named global ambassador for cosmetics giant L’Oréal Paris the same year.

Why Amber Heard Removed From The Aquaman 2

Aquaman fans appear to be opposed to Amber Heard appearing in the sequel to the first film. While plans are currently in place for the actress to reprise her role as Aquaman’s love interest Mera, a petition to have her removed from the film is quickly gaining traction.

Heard is in the midst of a particularly nasty and public lawsuit filed by her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. The trial began on April 11 after her ex filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard for writing an op-ed in the Washington Post claiming she was a victim of domestic abuse by the Pirates of the Caribbean actor. Despite the fact that Heard has filed a $100 million countersuit, Depp has claimed that he was the victim of abuse at the hands of Heard, and it appears that a growing number of fans believe his version of events.

Fans have started a petition in support of Depp, requesting that Amber Heard be removed from Aquaman 2. The petition claims that Heard “has been exposed as a domestic abuser” and goes on to say that Depp suffered for years at the hands of the actress, citing an incident in which she allegedly punched him in the face and “shattered” his finger with a vodka bottle.

Following a litany of alleged actions by Heard that show she is the abuser rather than the other way around, the petition demands that Warner Bros. and DC take swift action against the actress, stating that she must be removed from the role of Mera. Since its inception, the petition has seen a surge in support, with nearly 2.4 million signatures at the time of writing.

The public reaction to the trial has been accumulating among fans and, apparently, some of the people who work with the performers at the centre of the dispute. That includes Heard’s Aquaman co-star, Jason Momoa, who followed Depp on social media earlier this week, prompting some to believe the move was a show of support for the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star.

The petition is not the first time Aquaman fans have imagined a world in which Amber Heard is removed from the franchise. One Instagram user even went so far as to create a piece of fan art depicting Emilia Clarke as Mera.

The film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theatres on March 17, 2023.
