Left 4 Dead 3 – Rumors And What We Know So Far

Due to the fact that Left 4 Dead 2 was released ten years ago (I know, I feel ancient as well), the rumor mill has been ablaze with rumors of a Left 4 Dead sequel.

For more than a decade, fans have been anticipating the release of the next installment of the game, which ended on a major cliffhanger. Does anyone know whether or not any of the Left 4 Dead 3 release date rumors are true? We look into the matter and assist you in distinguishing between fact and fiction.

Left 4 Dead 3 Release Date

Aside from official announcements and leaks, all information about the Left 4 Dead 3 video game has been obtained through unauthorized means. Despite numerous requests, Left 4 Dead 2 developers Valve have not yet stated their official position on the sequel.

However, by not saying anything in either case, they are unquestionably leaving the door wide open. They may not be responding with a “yes,” but they are not responding with a “no.”

Because we’ve been waiting for a possible sequel for more than a decade, it’s difficult to predict when it will actually be available. Unfortunately for fans, many are now beginning to believe that the game was once in development but has since been scrapped, which is a source of concern.

If this is the case, it does account for some of the more legitimate leaks as well as the long period of time we’ve been sitting and waiting for more. There’s just no way to predict a release date at this point in time without more substantial evidence.

What Do We Know So Far?

The first indication of a Left 4 Dead 3 release came in the form of an interview conducted by Eurogamer with Chet Faliszek, the series’ lead writer, back in 2012. When asked if there would be a sequel to the critically acclaimed game, he responded in a cryptic but encouraging manner.

“Is there a [Left 4 Dead] 3?” he wondered. You know, a little later on down the road. That is something I would say about all of our games, just as I would about anything else. As a result, there is no guarantee as to when or where.”

However, Faliszek has since left Valve, which has put a damper on our anticipation for a sequel to this game. It’s impossible to predict whether or not his successor will be as enthusiastic about the third title at this point.

Forward to 2016, and we have our next possible leak in our possession. This time it comes in the form of a benchmarking tool for the HTC Vive virtual reality headset. In the source files and assets of Left 4 Dead, there were a number of references that many believed hinted at the development of a Left 4 Dead sequel.

Among the other things, there was an infected enemy known as “The Nocturnal,” which clearly alluded to a zombie-like theme, as well as day and night cycles and an older male character. Although it’s unclear whether this male character was intended to be an NPC or a playable survivor – or if he was even intended to be a playable survivor – the whole thing reeked of Left 4 Dead 3.

Later in the same year, we received yet another leak, this one much more credible. A Valve employee appeared to have accidentally leaked the game’s existence through a misplaced screenshot, according to reports. Fans who were quick to notice the hint buried in a tutorial that had been posted on Steam were rewarded with a free game.

In the screenshot, he had a folder named “left4dead3” listed among his list of folders. Adding fuel to the fire, the screenshot was quickly deleted, leading us to believe that it was an accident on their part that caused the leak.

Is Left 4 Dead 3 a thing of the past or is it still in development?

After the leaks two years ago, we haven’t heard a peep from the administration. As a result, many people believe that the project has been shelved altogether. It appears as though it was definitely in development at one point, but given the amount of time that has passed, it is becoming less and less likely.

One of Valve’s concept artists who had worked on L4D had left the company, however, as recently as 2013. When he did, he immediately uploaded images of two male characters to his online portfolio, which many people believe to be concept art for the game. This particular piece of artwork depicted two Middle-Eastern men wielding weapons, and it caused quite a commotion for one very specific reason.

Another Valve member released a collection of screenshots earlier this year, claiming that Left 4 Dead 3 was in development, but that it had since been shelved for unknown reasons. These screenshots depict a setting that is similar to Counter-Strike’s; it is middle-eastern in style and corresponds perfectly with the concept art that we discussed earlier in this article. All of this has led to many fans being less than optimistic about the possibility of Left 4 Dead 3 ever seeing the light of day.

Final Words

While we can all continue to scour the internet for possible news of a Left 4 Dead 3 release, we aren’t feeling particularly optimistic about the prospect of it actually happening any time in the near future. It seems strange, given how well its predecessor performed, but such is the fickle nature of the video game industry, it would appear, that this is the case.
