Zendaya, as she is officially known, is a model and actress. The American actress, singer, and dancer Maree Stoermer Coleman (born September 1, 1996, Oakland, California, United States) first gained prominence for her comedic roles on the Disney Channel before transitioning to more serious roles, such as Rue Bennett in the HBO series Euphoria, for which she received an Emmy Award.
Zendaya Stoermer Ajamu was born to teachers Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu in Los Angeles, California. Early on, she began practicing hula with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts in Oakland, California and dancing with Future Shock Oakland, a hip-hop dance troupe. She has been performing professionally since she was a young child.
She then went on to study at the California Shakespeare Festival Conservatory Program in Orinda, the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and the Oakland School for the Arts, among other places.
During her time at the latter, Zendaya appeared in a number of stage productions, including Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and Caroline, or Change at Palo Alto’s TheaterWorks, among others (both in California).
In addition to Richard III, Twelfth Night, and As You Like It, she has performed in several other Shakespearean productions. She has also worked as a model, appeared in television commercials, and performed as a dancer in a Kidz Bop video.

When Zendaya was sixteen years old, she auditioned for and was cast as Raquel (“Rocky”) Blue, one of the main characters in the Disney Channel comedy Shake It Up, which is about two Chicago teenagers who are attempting to realize their dreams of becoming professional dancers.
The show ran from 2011 to 2013, and during that time Zendaya released her first single, “Swag It Out,” as well as her first full-length album, Zendaya (2013), which included the hit song “Replay.”
Zendaya’s first single, “Swag It Out,” was released in 2011. She has also appeared in a number of Disney-made-for-television films, including Frenemies (2012) and Zapped (2013), among others (2014).
The actress and singer had amassed a large fan base as a result of her acting and singing roles, and in 2013 she published a book of advice, Between U and Me: How to Rock Your Tween Years with Style and Confidence (2013), that was aimed squarely at her preteen audience.
Zulilya also competed on the 16th season of Dancing with the Stars (2013), where she put her dancing abilities to the test and placed third overall.
Despite having the highest scores for the majority of the season, she finished as the runner-up on the final episode of the season. From 2015 to 2018, Zendaya starred as K.C. Undercover on Disney’s K.C. Undercover and helped to produce several episodes of the show.
In an effort to broaden her acting opportunities, Zendaya appeared in her first non-Disney role in 2015, as a guest star on the television comedy Black-ish.
She also appeared in a number of music videos during this time period, including Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” (2015), Beyoncé’s “All Night” (2016), and Bruno Mars’s “Versace on the Floor” (2017). Zendaya made her big-screen debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where she played Michelle (“MJ”) Jones, in the year 2017.
In the same year, she appeared in the musical film The Greatest Showman, where she demonstrated her many talents by performing trapeze and singing (along with Zac Efron) one of the film’s most talked-about songs (“Rewrite the Stars”). 2019 saw her guest star on the TV drama The O.A. and take on the lead role of Rue Bennett, a high-school student dealing with anxiety and drug addiction, in the HBO series Euphoria, which premiered in January.
Her performance in Euphoria was hailed as “haunting, painful, and affecting,” and she was awarded the Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series in 2020.
At the time, she was the youngest actor to take home a prize in that particular category. Zendaya has also appeared in Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2019), both of which feature her as MJ (2021). Her other films from 2021 included the romantic drama Malcolm & Marie, the animated Space Jam: A New Legacy, and an adaptation of Dune, the science-fiction epic written by Frank Herbert and first published in 1965.
