Each season of “Unforgotten” focuses on a new cold case after a body is found, following Cassie and Sunny as they unravel the mystery behind the murder and chase down the people involved.
In Season 1, the case involves a 17-year-old boy whose remains are found during the demolition of a house. At the same time, personal developments going on in the duo’s personal lives, with Seasons 3 and 4 exploring Cassie’s relationship with her father after he is diagnosed with dementia.
Season 4 of “Unforgotten” finished its run on ITV in March before going on to air on PBS, and fans are already wondering about Season 5 — especially after that Season 4 finale shock. Here’s everything we know so far about “Unforgotten” Season 5. Please note, there will be spoilers for “Unforgotten” Season 4.
When will Unforgotten Season 5 come out?
In the case of “Unforgotten,” the first season premiered in October 2015, the second season premiered in January 2017, and the third season premiered in July 2018. Season 4 of “Unforgotten” was delayed until February 22, 2021, as a result of the epidemic and filming limitations.
The good news for “Unforgotten” fans is that the show has already been renewed for a fifth season, as writer Chris Lang revealed on Twitter shortly after the Season 4 conclusion.
The return to regular production schedules of many television shows means that “Unforgotten” is likely to follow suit. Since the show is expected to return in late spring or early summer of 2022, fans can expect to see the London detectives again.
Fans of “Unforgotten” should keep in mind that the industry could experience problems in late 2021 or beyond that could postpone the following season’s release, but as of right now, everything appears to be on schedule.
Who will be in the cast of Unforgotten Season 5?
Part of what’s always brought fans back to “Unforgotten” each season is the friendship between Cassie and Sunny as they work on cases together. At the end of Season 4, their collaboration comes to an end when Cassie dies from a head injury after a vehicle incident. In a statement issued on the show’s official Twitter, ITV commended Walker for “performing the magnificent part of Cassie Stuart” in “Unforgotten,” before revealing that Walker and Lang determined jointly that Cassie would meet her end in the Season 4 finale.
The statement then went on to declare that the show will be returning with Season 5 “with a fresh case, and a new ‘Partner in Crime’ for DI Sunny Khan.”
Walker’s decision to depart the series likely has to do with her upcoming crime thriller “Annika,” or she just felt it was time for Cassie’s journey to end.
Despite the tragic news of Walker’s leaving, the show must go on, and there will be someone new coming in as Sunny’s companion. ITV has made no statement yet regarding who will be replacing Cassie, so fans with have to wait and watch as development proceeds on Season 5.
As for the remainder of the cast, there will be new actors filling out the surrounding positions connected to the new case, although certain characters will continue over from Season 4.
This includes Jordan Long as DS Murray Boulting, Lewis Reeves as DC Jake Collier, Carolina Main as DC Fran Lingley, Georgia Mackenzie as Dr. Leanne Balcombe, Janet Dibley as Jenny, and Michelle Bonnard as Sal, Sunny’s romantic life partner.
A number of the other recurrent characters are up in the air due to their close ties to Cassie, however, her boss, Colin R. Campbell as DSI Clive Andrews, will certainly return as well.

What will Unforgotten Season 5 be about?
Matthew Walsh’s decapitated body is found in a freezer in a trash dump in the fourth season of “Unforgotten.” Cassie is compelled to return to work after taking a sick leave owing to her mental breakdown in Season 3’s dark case.
She also has to deal with her father’s dementia and her changing relationship with him. Sunny looks to be doing well at work and with Sal, but he is anxious about Cassie.
Walsh was not entirely innocent, as he committed several terrible crimes shortly before his death, as shown in Season 4. But it was his murder of Stephen, Dean’s (Andy Nyman’s) brother, that prompted Dean to seek vengeance and murder Walsh.
Cassie is T-boned by a fast car shortly before the truth is revealed and the guilty are arrested. The doctors try to revive Sunny, but she dies in operation.
Sunny and the rest of the crew will miss Cassie while adjusting to a new companion (whoever that may be). It will be a difficult time for the investigators, but they must keep working. Lang recently spoke to PBS’s Masterpiece 50 “It’s the story’s most political so far, with a tiny ‘p.’ And it introduces him to a new companion in crime, which is beautiful and refreshing. That’s all I can say about it. She’s at a different life stage. She’s a babe He has a new boss.”
