The nation of India reserves six days for remembrance of the people who laid their lives for the country. These days are locally known as, Sarvodaya Day.
Martyrs’ Day and months which have a significance
When the country enters a new year. First month makes them realise how Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi worked for nation. On January 30th, Gandhiji was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. So January 30 sits as first martyr’s day of the year.
Then follows March 23, when Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru lost their lives in the fight for independence. It was 1931, when the three put their lives on the line for freedom struggle. These three men were hanged in the process.
The third in the line falls on May 19. This day is known as language martyrs day and locally recognized as “Bhasha Shaheed Divas”. It was when, the Assam Government made a decision that Assamese would be the official language of the state including Barak Valley. But there were protests and consequently bloodshed. It was because Bengali people were also a part of human count in the valley.
Fourth in the list of six days is Police Commemoration Day. It falls on 21st October.
The fifth is to remember Lala Lajpat Rai. He died on 17th of November. He is popularly known as, “Lion Of Punjab”. .
The sixth and the last in the list lies on November 19. It was when Rani Lakshmibai was born.
