On Wednesday, a minor earthquake of 3.5 magnitude hit Los Angeles at 8.31 am in the morning. The earthquake occurred just before the historical swearing ceremony of Kamala Harris as the first female Vice President. The tremor was felt across the city as far as Calabasas and Orange County but fortunately it did not cause any damage because of its low intensity. It was so feeble that most of the residents didn’t feel the quake. In recent months, United States has witnessed minor earthquakes. The earthquake occurred just before the historical swearing of Kamala Harris as the first female Vice President.
The earthquake occurred near dangerous seismic zone “Newport-Inglewood Fault”
According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre of this earthquake was in the west of Magic Johnson Park which is less than a mile from Compton and a mile from West Athens. The tremor occurred at a depth of 11.7 miles. Luci Jones, a Seismologist, said that the earthquake occurred near Newport-Inglewood (NI) fault, which is regarded as one of the top seismic danger zones of Southern California. If the earthquake would have hit directly at the Newport fault, it could have been disastrous. She tweeted, “The focal mechanism shows us the ground moved up and down, the NI fault moves sideways”. Going by the previous there years data, on an average, five earthquakes having magnitude between 3 and 4 occur each year in Los Angeles area.
