Actress Diana Rigg passes away at the age of 82. Confirming the news of her death, Diana Rigg’s daughter, actress Rachael Stirling, said that she died of cancer, after being diagnosed in March. She further added that Diana Rigg spent her last months happily which reflected on her extraordinary life that was full of love, laughter, and deep pride in her profession.
Diana was famous for her roles as Emma Peel in the 1965-1968 TV series The Avengers. She was recently seen as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones series which ended in 2017. Diana Rigg was also the only woman who became Mrs. James Bond. She portrayed Tracy, who married George Lazenby’s 007 in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Directors and Actors pay homage

Lazenby said he was “so sad” to hear of Diana Rigg’s death. Furthermore, Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli paid homage to Diana Rigg with a simple and thankful tweet. Diana Rigg claimed her Bafta trophy for the best actress

In 1990, Diana won the best actress Bafta TV award for characterizing a difficult mother-in-law in Mother Love. She also claimed her Bafta trophy in 2000 for The Avengers, sharing it with the series’ other stars Honor Blackman, Joanna Lumley, and Linda Thorson. Being nominated for four Tony Awards resulted in Diana Rigg winning for her searing portrayal in the leading role in the stage play Medea in 1994.

Debut as a professional stage artist

Diana debuted as a professional stage artist n 1957 in The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Then she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1959. Although it was her role as the karate-kicking leather-clad secret agent, Emma Peel, in the Avengers in 1965, that brought her to wide attention. Speaking about her young fans, Diana said last year, “Obviously, it’s great that has happened, and great it was a young audience — terrific. That’s the nature of my profession. The young, I don’t expect them to know about my past, but if, through Game of Thrones, they discover me, that’s good.”Explaining it further, Diana Rigg spoke of her delight at her role in Game of Thrones, speaking: “I love playing bad [characters]. They are so much more interesting than good.”
Diana, born in Doncaster in northern England, moved with her family to India before going to school in England. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before making her debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1959.
