On Tuesday, one move made by the Justice Department left everyone stunned. The Department expressed its interest to take over the defense of President Donald Trump in a defamation case filed against him. E Jean Caroll accused Trump of sexual assault. She alleged that the incident took place over 20 years ago. However, the President claimed that he had seen the woman for the very first time. He has repeatedly denied all allegations put forth by Caroll time and again.
How does the Justice Department come into the picture?
The Department claims that Trump can be defended by government attorneys as he was still the President when the lawsuit was filed against him. The filing says,
President Trump was acting within the scope of his office as President of the United States at the time of the incidents out of which the Plaintiff’s defamation claim arose.
The Department seeks to move the case to a federal court from a state court. However, Caroll’s lawyer accused the President of replacing his private lawyer with a government attorney. She said,
Trump’s effort to wield the power of the U.S. government to evade responsibility for his private misconduct is without precedent, and shows even more starkly how far he is willing to go to prevent the truth from coming out.
E Jean Caroll’s Claim
Caroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room back in the 1990s. At the time, she had been working as an advice columnist in Elle magazine for over 20 years. She claimed that Trump asked her for advice as he was buying lingerie for another woman. Apparently, he asked her to model it for him as a joke.
After hearing this statement, President Trump straight-away denied all of it and said that Caroll was narrating a fictional story. Caroll further claimed that this incident led to her losing the job at Elle magazine. It damaged her reputation and career for good.
E Jean Caroll’s Demand
Additionally, Caroll’s legal team is asking the president to provide his DNA. They are very curious to see if his DNA matches the one present on a black Donna Karan dress, which Caroll was wearing at the time of the incident. Further, Caroll said,
President Trump knows that I told the truth when I said that he had sexually assaulted me in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman. He also knows that he was lying when he said that he had never met me before and that I ‘wasn’t his type.’
