Hilary Swank’s Netflix “Away” review : family drama in space


” Away” is a new Netflix series released on Sept 4, showcase the emotional struggle that astronauts have to do to go to space. Going to space is not an easy task, you need to be highly qualified  You also need a lot of courage to say goodbye to the family, friends, Earth, and land on a totally different planet. Away is a Netflix series based on this only. It requires a lot of struggle emotionally as well as physically to go on a space mission

The theme of the series

Away is a story of a woman who is a part of the Mars mission. Academy Award winner Hilary Swank is in the lead. She is a mother and a wife in the series.  She says goodbye to her family and leaves for the Red Planet Mission. Away is inspired by the real-life story of a NASA astronaut Scott Kelly. This story is taken from the 2014 Esquire Feature by the writer Chris Jonas who explored NASA Scott Kelly’s year-long mission abroad.


The story revival around the journey of the astronauts, Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki) from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), U.K. astronaut Dr. Kwesi Weisberg-Abban (Ato Essandoh), Lu Wang (Vivian Wu) from China, and Russian cosmonaut Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir).
They are lead by Emma Green Swank from NASA.

Going to Mars

The first tough task for the astronauts was to say goodbye to their family, friends for the mission. The chance of surviving the missing is roughly 50/50 which is known to all and puts more complication for the crew member to take a major step especially Lu, who is hiding a secret part of her identity from the crew as well as her family too. As the journey began, there hiya chemical leak which causes a fire in the rocket which can result in death.

It causes the fight between crew members that they doubt commander Green leadership, they think she may not fir for leading the crew. It becomes so intense that some crew members go so far as to report back to ground control. Another hurdle comes, as craft’s solar array won’t go up properly, so to prevail the fire from floating off into the air, Greek and Popov have to do a spacewalk.

Overall, Away is a complete rollercoaster ride with so much to action in the space and emotional drama. To make it more realistic, Peggy Whitson and Mike Massimino have guided the production crew and the actors. Massimino even has a brief cameo in the series. It is a worth watching series available on Netflix.
