Markowitz endorses Bloomberg for Mayor

After favorable words for New York City Comptroller (and fellow Democrat) Bill Thompson outside of Borough Hall this morning, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz endorsed Thompson’s rival Michael Bloomberg for Mayor. “It would take extraordinary circumstances for me to go in another direction,” Markowitz said, “so I must be true to what I believe in my heart and say what I think would be best for Brooklynites and for all New Yorkers.” Stating that he couldn’t ignore Bloomberg’s record of “competence and accomplishments,” Markowitz went on to say that he doesn’t believe in term limits, and “when you have a great thing you stick with it.” While Markowitz recognized that he and Bloomberg do not agree on everything, both believe that “Brooklyn is where New York City begins.”

“Marty knows that this election isn’t about partisanship, it’s about leadership,” Bloomberg said in response to Marty’s crossing political party lines to make this endorsement. He went on to discuss the projects that he and Markowitz have worked on together – creating jobs, building affordable housing, revitalizing the waterfronts from Red Hook to Coney Island, promoting Brooklyn’s art and culture, bringing down crime – not as Democrats or Republicans, but as New Yorkers. “We did it as two people who love Brooklyn with all its diversity and history and energy, and we believe that Brooklyn’s best days are yet to come.”
