Vermont Market & Pharmacy opens its door

Lost City reports that Vermont Market & Pharmacy, an organic/homeopathic-type store that hasn’t been open – or changed – for over a decade had some movement in and out of its door this past weekend, as “piles of dusty junk” were removed from the inside. The New York Times featured the store in an article last year, claiming that the market, opened in 1996 while Carroll Gardens still had a “mixed reputation,” was an “experiment attempted before its time… before the neighborhood went upscale.”

Lost City: I stopped and spoke to one of the young men working to clean out the space. He said the place was going to reopen soon as a kind of half-store, half-soda fountain. They would serve old-fashioned fountain-type sodas “using local, natural flavorings,” egg creams, a variety of “tinctures” and teas. There is to be a kind of informal opening in late June, even though things would not be fully up and running by then.
