Season 3 of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York airs in early March, so it’s time to start seeing the cast in the press. Our very own real housewife of Cobble Hill, Alex McCord, recently gave her “haute” secrets to Haute Living Blog. She gave quite a few shout outs to the nabe- including Bar Tabac for her favorite late night dining, Lucali’s for favorite pizza, and the Chocolate room for favorite dessert.

New indoor skate park from Smith Street skate shop
The couple behind Homage, the skate/snowboarding shop at 151 Smith Street, have opened up an indoor skateboarding spot under the same name at 615 Degraw Street. Wooden skateboard ramps have been built in the 2,500-square-foot concrete space, which is currently only open to members who pay the $100 membership fee.
New York Times: Ms. Sauer, a former designer at Zoo York, the skateboard company, and at Burton, the snowboard company, said she and Mr. Portes planned to offer day-rate admission soon. “It’s hard for New Yorkers to skate in the winter,” Mr. Portes said. “So we wanted to set up a training facility because we want to see more pro skaters coming out of New York.”
Check out the Brooklyn Flea this weekend
Hop on the G to Fulton and browse the offerings at the new winter home to the Brooklyn Flea, the clocktower building at 1 Hanson Place. This will be the only location of the Brooklyn Flea through March, and it’s definitely worth a visit. I stopped by last weekend (its first in the new locale), so I know that even if sifting through vintage clothing and old records isn’t your thing, exploring the gorgeous interior of the clocktower building is worthy of the visit on its own. On the lower level of the former Williamsburg Savings Bank is the vault where the Brooklyn Flea food vendors set up shop, serving pupusas (tasty, but not very authentic), Asian hot dogs (with a veggie dog option!), lobster rolls (a bit pricey at $14 bucks), and more (the food court got a recent mention in the NY Times Dining section).
Expand your mind at the Brooklyn Brainery
Started by two postgrads with under-stimulated minds, the Brooklyn Brainery kicks off its first “semester” of classes this Monday, January 18th. A self-described book club on steroids, the goal of Brooklyn Brainery is to bring new information to those who want it in the form of cheap collaborative classes ($25 per group of 4 classes). The inaugural classes range from learning about meat, to optical illusions, and the sense of smell. All courses take place at the Gowanus Studio Space (166 7th St between Second and Third Aves) and can be read about in more detail on the Brooklyn Brainery website.
Bobby Flay Throwdown on Court Street
Tonight’s Throwdown with Bobby Flay features John Addis of Fish Tales (191 Court Street). Flay challenged Addis to a Manhattan fish chowder throwdown, which was filmed last September at the Waterfront Museum in Red Hook. Check out the episode tonight on the Food Network at 9pm.
Parents fight to keep the Little Room open
We’ve been covering the fate of the Little Room – the Brooklyn Heights Montessori school program for special needs preschool-aged children – for over a year now, and we last reported that the program would remain part of the school until August 2010, with hopes of it finding a new home. Now in the last half of this school year, parents of Little Room students have written a letter to Dane Peters, the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School Headmaster, and Helene Banks, Chair of the Board of Trustees. The letter explains the current situation, which is that the Little Room is more or less at the end of the line in terms of having all approvals necessary to get a new adopting agency, and a space ready, for September 2010 for the 2010-2011 school year. There is a potential and very interested adopter but there has not been ample time to find a new space, so more time is needed. This additional time requires speedy state approval, or the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School extending their own deadline.
The following letter was signed by 33 past and present Little Room families, and was sent on Sunday evening. Continue Reading →
Norah Jones cuts back on windows
Perhaps fearing a picket line outside of her Amity Street house over her window installation plans, Norah Jones has chosen to decrease her city-approved addition of 10 windows to 7. The new application, minus 3 windows, was submitted to the Landmark Preservation Committee on December 9, according to the Post. I’m no architecture expert- are the 7 windows that much more consistent with the building’s 19th-century character?
