ALERT: Trains not running

Something is wrong with the trains at the moment, so your best bet is to figure out an alternate route to work if you plan on leaving any time around now. No trains have come into the Carroll Street Station for quite a while now.

LPC backs Norah Jones’ windows

The Landmarks Preservations Committee will not reconsider their approval of Norah Jones’ window installment, despite complaints from neighbors that the windows are inconsistent with the building’s architecture and the demand for a public hearing.

YourNabe: Commission spokesperson Lisi de Bourbon told this paper Wednesday that there are no plans to hold a hearing on the Amity Street property between Clinton and Court streets regardless of complaints from the Cobble Hill Association and other concerned parties who believe that Jones’ new windows would be “out of character” in the landmarked block.

“We have no plans to have a hearing and there is no basis to rescind the existing approval,” de Bourbon said about the songstress’ request to install “ten new masonry openings” as well as “two-over-two double-hung windows within the openings” on the side of her home.

Shooting in Boerum Hill

Brownstoner received a tip about a shooting on Warren Street last night:

A reader emailed us last night after arriving home at around 8 o’clock to find that her block of Warren Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues had been shut down following a shooting. There were a couple of dozen cops on hand, and they said that someone from the nearby Gowanus Houses had been shot; she inferred from there comments that it was a teenager. She also inferred that the shooter was still on the loose. Anyone else nearby pick up any other details?

Armando Tailor to become tanning salon

Photo, Lost City.

Photo, Lost City.

Lost City reports that Smith Street’s recently shuttered Armanda Tailor will become a tanning salon. Does anyone know how long, exactly, the shop was there for?

Armando Tailor and Dry Cleaner, a fixture on Smith Street near President, has closed. The neighboring shoe repair shop told me the old Italian tailor who ran it has retired. The man, silver-haired and with glasses and very little English, was an old-school craftsman. He could do all the things that nobody bothers with anymore: fix buttonholes, replace zippers, etc. I’ve had most of my suits tailored and cuffed there over the years. He knew his work and did it expertly, and, consequently, charged a little more. But he was honest. Last year, when I took a worn, but beloved old winter coat in to get a new lining, he looked it over with a skeptical eye, then asked me, “Do you really like this coat?” He was telling me it wasn’t worth what it would cost me to get a new lining. I did it anyway. I’m glad I did. It’s the last piece of work he did for me.

Ganic Antic Sparks Blog War

neilganicAs we posted earlier,  foodie blog Eater published a missive from a reader claiming that Petite Crevette chef-owner Neil Ganic went ballistic on them after they complained about the freshness of their lobster dinner.

Now,  New York newser blog Gothamist zings Eater with a confirmation quote from Ganic himself:

Gothamist: I don’t know any Eater; but I don’t have time to sit in front of my computer all day. I’m a working man. But this guy told me the lobster was not fresh, so I came out and showed him it was fresh. And I told him to go ahead and blog about it. If you’re not happy, you have the right to complain, and I have the right to throw you out. You can blog all you want! For this guy to send back the lobster again and again after their appetizer and other courses, that’s unacceptable. But I didn’t charge them.

Eater: Neil Ganic Manic Panic

Eater reports on a customer allegation that chef-owner Neil Ganic of Petite Crevette went a little nutty on them after complaining that the eatery’s lobster was not “fresh”:

Eater: Last night we tried out Petite Crevette, the little Frenchy fish place on the other side of the BQE in Carroll Gardens. It’s run by Neil Ganic, who apparently has a reputation for being crazy, at least based on the googling I did when I got home. Anyway, my husband ordered ciopino, and the lobster came out pretty much raw. So he sent it back, and when it returned, it was still kind of weird and gloopy. So, we very politely said we’d just take the check.

Suddenly, Neil Ganic comes running out of the kitchen with a LIVE LOBSTER and throws it on the table. He shouts “You think my fish is not fresh? Look how fresh this is!” Swear to god.

It was INSANE. And then he banned us from the restaurant forever. The waiter comped us the meal, so we left him a big tip. He seemed really beleaguered. Also, we were the only people in the restaurant for most of the time, so it’s not like he was just distracted cooking other meals. This big group sat down just before the lobster incident, and they seemed horrified.
And! I guess he’d heard us talking about Yelp reviews earlier, because he kept yelling “You want to blog about this? Fine! Blog about it!”
