New bar from owners of BGH
The owners of Bar Great Harry are opening a new bar named Mission Dolores in Park Slope this fall. Mission Dolores is a Catholic Church in California, and the oldest standing structure in San Francisco. Think that’s where the inspiration came from? The bar’s going to have heated floors, and while it’s painful to think about heat coming from the floor right now, it’s going to be welcome come the winter.
Metromix: 249B Fourth Ave. between Carroll and President Sts.
The brothers behind Smith Street beer den Bar Great Harry are opening another brew-centric watering hole, right next to Cattyshack on Fourth Avenue in Park Slope. Mission Dolores, as it’s called, will serve 24 craft beers and one cask ale on tap-18 American, plus six Belgian and German-as well as a handful of DUB meat pies, like it’s done back at Bar Great Harry. The furniture and materials will mostly be salvaged, and the space is “bizarre,” according to co-owner Mike Wiley, who describes it as “a huge Vol de Nuit,” which as far as we’re concerned sounds great. Bonus: Heated floors. The better for lying on the ground in the winter? Pacific Standard, watch your thoughtful, pleasant back. (Late September/early October)
Cooking school for kids in Boerum Hill
The New York Times featured a story on Creative Cooks, a Boerum Hill-based culinary center designed for kids. Started by native New Yorker Emily Rios, the school exposes children from ages 5 through 11 to different varieties of food, from both a culinary and ethnic viewpoint.
NYT: The school’s kitchen, on the ground floor of a row house, would be the envy of most home cooks. It is painted yellow with red lacquered cabinets generously stocked with all manner of culinary tools. There is a large refrigerator, a deep fryer, a blender for making dough and fillings, a bamboo sushi rolling mat and a shelf of white aprons labeled big and small.
When it is time to cook, everybody puts on an apron and sits down to watch Ms. Rios demonstrate how to measure ingredients and handle utensils. “Being prepared is half the battle in terms of keeping their attention,” Ms. Rios said. “A lot of the dishes I choose have multiple steps and are interesting to prepare.”
Watty & Meg owner on WNYC
Sosie Hublitz, the owner of Watty & Meg, joined Daniel Boulud and Pamela Parseghian, the executive food editor of Nation’s Restaurant News, on the Leonard Lopate show on Monday. They discussed opening restuarants during the recession, and how restaurants are adapting to the economic crisis. The full segment can be heard here.
Carroll Street F station may lose agent
Lost City received a letter from Bill de Blasio alerting neighborhood residents that the station agent booth at the Carroll Street F station may be closed. What kind of chaos do you think a closure like this will result in? Quite a few parents with strollers are going to have to visit a different station.
Update: Sign a petition to keep the station agents here.
Read the letter after the jump. Continue Reading →
Leo the Lion is alive on Clinton Street
The residents at 368 Clinton Street really enjoy celebrating the Leos of the world, as evidenced by this photo mcbrooklyn took of this life-size lion outside of their window. This isn’t even the first time that they’ve done it.
The Franks: Insiders
This past weekend’s edition of New York Times’ The Insider, which “profiles emerging tastemakers in the fields of fashion, design, food, travel and the arts,” featured Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli of Frankies 457, Prime Meats, and Cafe Pedlar. Check out the interview to find out where they like to hang out, shop, and travel.
Krystle Warren at Brooklyn Lyceum
Check out Krystle Warren and her accompanying jazz band, The Faculty, tomorrow night, August 15, at the Brooklyn Lyceum (227 4th Avenue). The show starts at 9pm, and tickets are $12.
From a Brooklyn Lyceum press release:
Born and raised in Kansas City, Warren thrived in KC’s artistic counterculture, learning from jazz musicians, poets and artists. Soon her song took her to New York City where she eventually fell in with the jazz musicians she performs with today. With The Faculty on board, Krystle’s live shows have been garnishing praise from both fans and critics alike, and she’s toured the US with artists ranging from Martha Wainwright to Zap Mama, Rodrigo & Gabriela to Erykah Badu.
Trolleys coming to Red Hook?
Incase you haven’t heard, Michael Bloomberg expressed an interest in trolleys at a campaign event last week, where he unveiled new transportation proposals. The already-laid tracks in Red Hook could be where the proposed trolleys get their start. What do you think about the possibility of trolleys in Red Hook?
NY1: “We’ll look into the feasibility of using the city’s old trolley tracks to create new streetcar service in growing waterfront neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn, starting in Red Hook,” said Bloomberg.
Red Hook is a prime candidate because development along the waterfront is growing, and because the area is underserved by mass transit. What’s more, Diamond says, is the fact that trolleys can hold about two busloads of passengers, and have zero emissions.
Council Candidate Skaller has 3 Friends… on MySpace
Ok, so no one really uses MySpace anymore so the fact that D39 City Council candidate Josh Skaller has three friends (including everyone’s friend Tom) on the social networking site is really not that horrible.
But then again what would you expect from a guy who has his wife fight his man-battles via email ?
Brother, take a hint from the real Dick… Nixon on how to address stupid, made up family issues hurled at you from other dopey politicians during a campaign:
