Lucali opening in Park Slope?
In Wednesday’s New York Times, Frank Bruni examines the newest in the crop of artisan-like pizzerias that have opened around New York recently, giving our very own Lucali, which has been open since 2006, its due praise. There’s also a rumor that Lucali may be expanding into Park Slope…

Bastille Day 2009
Bastille Day will be celebrated two days earlier this year in the nabe, with this Sunday, July 12, marking the 7th annual Bastille Day on Smith Street celebration. The festivities, which run on Smith from Bergen to Pacific, will begin at noon and go until 8:00 pm. As always, there will be live music and dancing in the streets, plenty of food and drinks, and Bar Tabac’s annual petanque tournament, where 80 teams with players from around the world will take place in the largest North American petanque tournament there is. This is definitely one of the more fun events to check out this summer, so mark your calendars now!
Poutine comes to Cobble Hill
BlackBook reports that Mile End, a restaurant featuring the cuisine of Montreal, will be opening at 97 Hoyt Street (between Pacific and Atlantic). We can get moules frites at just about every other restaurant on Smith Street, but now poutine is coming to the nabe (for those who don’t know, it’s basically a dish of french fries topped with fresh cheese curds and covered with brown gravy)- this is exciting stuff.
Montreal regional cuisine — part Jewish, part Quebecois — has been MIA from New York’s diverse culinary scene until now. Expat Noah Bernamoff opens Mile End this fall, named after the city’s hippest ‘hood, and serving up the city’s no-fuss favorites. Poutine done right, with cheese curds flown in from la Belle Province, and topped with in house smoked meats (lamb, chicken, pastrami). Sink your teeth into MTL’s famouse St. Viateur bagels (with cream cheese and lox, obv), also making the trip across the border. Artisinal grilled cheese rounds out the all killer no filler menu, and micro-brewed beer from Quebec is on tap. Montreal is a great city, and here’s why.

Cobble Hill defies housing price slump
Housing prices were up one percent last quarter in Cobble Hill, the only Brooklyn neighborhood to see an increase. Across Brooklyn, the average housing price fell 18 percent, according to data from HMS Associates, a Brooklyn-based real estate appraisal firm.
While prices may be up, however, Cobble Hill housing sales plummeted 62 percent compared to the same period last year.
The steep decline could be good news for those looking to buy. “If you are able to come up with the financing, there is a lot of inventory out there,” said Sam Heskel, an appraiser.
Cobble Hill’s average housing price is now $933,438, compared to the borough-wide average of $548,560.
Sex and the stroller moms
As if the rumor that Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are the new owners of Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany’s Prospect Park West townhouse wasn’t enough excitement for stroller moms up and down the streets of Park Slope, Publishers Lunch announced last week that HBO and Parker’s production company optioned Prospect Park West, a chick-lit book written by Amy Sohn. (Thanks to a tipster, we know that Sohn’s mother lives in Brooklyn Heights and used to own a business on Cranberry Street.)
Publishers Lunch: Amy Sohn’s forthcoming PROSPECT PARK WEST, a sexy “mommy romp” set over one steamy Brooklyn summer as four women’s lives collide, sold to HBO and Sarah Jessica Parker’s production company, Pretty Matches, with Sohn creating and writing the pilot, via agent Daniel Greenberg at Levine Greenberg, with Creative Artists Agency.
