Bike thieves caught

The Brooklyn Paper reports that two men have been arrested for bike thefts that have taken place this month around Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill.

An officer busted two local men – Adrian Figueroa, 37, and Gasper Alcade, 49 – who were seen clipping the locks on two bikes that had been tethered on Wyckoff Street on July 20.

Before their arrest, there were at least seven other cycles stolen between July 1 and 15 in the 76th Precinct.

But since a cop cuffed the pair between Hoyt and Smith streets, there have been no reported missing penny-farthings, according to a community affairs officer in the precinct.

Boerum Hill may be getting some new brownstones

According to The Real Deal, John Frezza, president of Strategic Development & Construction Group, and Sammy Brahimi, a partner at IBEC Building Corporation, have plans to build a collection of six high-end, one-family brownstones, called the Ensemble, will be located at 354-349 State Street between Hoyt and Bond Streets.

The series of six six-story brownstones will be roughly 5,000 square feet each, and range in price from $3.5 million to $4 million. Buyers will have the option of a modern or traditional design. All of them will have private outdoor terraces and basements, which he considers a sixth floor. Frezza also hopes the building will earn a LEED Silver rating for its eco-friendly design.

“These homes have been in development for a year and a half and we’ve been working on the virtual designs and gearing up to release the plans to the brokerage community for a while,” Frezza said.

Little Room to relocate despite Montessori expansion

Back in December 2008, we covered the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School’s decision to remove the Little Room, a program for special needs 3 and 4-year-olds, from its Bergen Street campus. The decision was made to keep the Little room open until August 2010, until it would be moved to join a different organization, which, according to the Brooklyn Paper, will possibly be the League Treatment Center, a center in DUMBO for children and adults with autism and other disabilities.

Brooklyn Paper: The planned expansion into the historic brick firehouse, as well as the takeover of the Little Room’s space, was a grim reminder for parents that the program will only remain in the Montessori School for this coming school year.

Some worry that future students will lose the developmental benefits that come from being around mainstream classes if they’re housed only in a special-education environment.

“It’s very disheartening,” said Joyce Creidy, the mother of twins graduating this summer from the Little Room. “The Little Room is in a nice space in a real school. The League [Treatment Center] is more of an institutionalized setting.”
