76th and 84th Precinct Police Blotter – 6/19/09

bugleblotterThis week’s blotters got sidelined in the hubbub of breaking Busted Chef news, but not forgotten. Here, finally, are your blotters:

Cops arrested two punks for stealing iPods and cellphones from two victims — the first of whom identified the punks during the second crime. The first incident happened at 11 pm on June 8 just outside the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station, when eight perps surrounded two guys and asked to use their cellphones. Two punks then hit the victims in the head, grabbed their backpacks, and raced away southbound on Hoyt Street. Cops came to the scene and drove around the neighborhood with the two victims, looking out for the perps.

An hour later: victory. As the cops and victims were canvassing, they discovered the hoodlums at it again on Livingston Street, between Bond Street and Hanover Place, where they had just asked a victim to use his phone. One perp said he had a knife and the second said he had a gun, so the victim handed over his phone without a fight. The cops jumped out of the squad car and chased the perps, arresting two of the three perps, ages 14 and 15.

Calexico: coming next Tuesday

picture-1Grub Street reports that Calexico’s opening date is next Tuesday, June 23.

When the doors finally open, they’ll serve the items you know and love as well as crack-sauce–laden torta and salad versions, plus new dishes such as shrimp and grits and daily specials such as ribs and tamales (the base menu is still coming together). When the beer-and-wine license comes in, there’ll be micheladas too, but during the BYOB phase, expect Mexican sodas and daily aguas frescas. Vendley says the look of the place will be unique “but still your modest taqueria,” with a blown-up picture from their hometown of Calexico, California, as the centerpiece, and hand-painted Mexican folk art on the walls. The store will eventually be open from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. (follow their Twitter page for updates about hours and the like), but rest assured the Vendleys are still invested in their carts. They’re hoping to add a third one by spring.

Watty & Meg: not worth it

watty-and-meg

Quite a few of you commented on the Serious Eats review of Watty & Meg, mostly agreeing with its grade of a B. I gave it about a month and a half to iron out kinks before I dined there, and after a Sunday evening dinner, I’d have to say that a B is very generous. Aside from the painfully slow service, the food was hardly mediocre, and often over-seasoned. The pictures above (apologies for the poor quality: photos from iPhone + poor lighting) show a few of the dishes my dining companions and I ate. Continue Reading →
