Carroll Gardens rezoning moves forward

The Brooklyn Paper reports that Community Board 6 has approved the rezoning of 86 blocks in Carroll Gardens and the Columbia Street Waterfront District, which will establish height limits on new construction.

“We don’t want to have the possibility of 70-foot-tall buildings in this area,” said John Hathaway, a member of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association. “The city says seven stories is unlikely. Well, unlikely is nice, but it’s not impossible.”

Hathaway added that “in general, the city did a very good job.”

Following a spirited debate, the committee adopted an amendment calling for the city to tweak this sliver of the plan to forbid the 70-feet tall monsters.

After an expected approval by the full board of Community Board 6, the plan goes to Borough President Markowitz, the City Planning Commission and the City Council as part of the city’s rigorous land-use review process.

July 4th weekend: stay or go?

july-4

With the first summer weekend almost absent of rain behind us, it’s going to be the 4th of July before we know it. Are you saying “economy be damned, I’m taking a weekend trip,” or are you going to stick around the city for fireworks on the Promenade and free events around the city (despite the increased $2.25 MTA fare and subway delays up the wazoo)?

Marty, Yassky Fill Potholes in Boerum Hill

Only in Brooklyn kiddies, only in Brooklyn comes word of our Beep Marty Markowitz and our man in the NYC Council/NYC ComPtroller candidate David Yassky teaming up and filling potholes. And now the beautiful press release:

On Thursday, June 25, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and City Council Member David Yassky to fill potholes on Bergen Street between Bond and Hoyt Streets. The DOT has repaired 290,000 potholes citywide in the last 12 months, including nearly 73,000 in Brooklyn. In the last week alone, more than 1,100 potholes in Brooklyn have been filled.

Brooklynites can also take pride in the fact that the asphalt mix used in Brooklyn is the “greenest” of all because it’s produced at DOT’s Hamilton Avenue plant and trucks don’t have to travel very far to fill potholes in the borough—reducing truck emissions.

Residents are asked to call 311 to register a pothole complaint; the DOT says, on average, potholes are repaired three days after reported.

There isn’t much information on the Smith Street festival that will be going on this Sunday from 11am-6pm this Sunday, June 28, but Pardon Me For Asking seems to have the scoop: there will be music, entertainment, art, and food vendors from Bergen Street to Union Street. The Times has a listing for the 3rd annual Stinky cheese eating contest:

Boerum Hill pub walk tonight

The Boerum Hill Association has organized a Boerum Hill pub walk tonight, June 23. To join, meet outside Trader Joe’s at 7:30pm. The event costs $10 and will include drinks specials at the bars that will be visited: Brazen Head, Brooklyn Inn, and Hanks.

Join us for a fun night of  interesting tid-bits about Boerum Hill, as you pass by famous addresses, historical sites and stop in for a drink at three cool local pubs. It’s not a pub crawl, but a chance to see and hear history come alive as we pass through the heart of Boerum Hill (with, of course, a civilized drink or three along the way).

Sex-crazed birds keep residents awake

A Daily News article brings attention to a problem plaguing Carroll Gardens residents: the love-making sounds of mockingbirds outside of their windows.

Tormented residents complain the ear-splitting love songs are as annoying as car alarms.

“It’s loud and shrill and grating,” fumed John DiMartino, 37, an engineer from Carroll Gardens,Brooklyn.

DiMartino had to buy earplugs to drown out the late-night love songs that started outside his apartment about three weeks ago. “It was making it hard for us to sleep.”
