Chocolate & absinthe… mmm
Nunu chocolate shop owner Justine Pringle has begun to add a little something special to the ganache in her Atlantic Avenue store- absinthe. According to a Times food writer, “It is licorice-sweet and shows off well against its dark chocolate coating.” Nunu is located at 529 Atlantic Avenue (3rd Avenue).
It Was a Good Day, Didn’t Have to Use My AK
A few days ago in a land far, far away – Gerritsen Beach – a bunch of kids out playing found an honest to goodness AK-47. We’ll let the Gerritsenbeach.net news team take it from here:
Gerritsenbeach.net: A real, unloaded, seaweed covered, AK-47 washed up on the shore of Garland Court and Allen Avenues. It was spotted then called in by the kids who play on that block.
The precinct responded to the situation and once it was determined that it was real, the Emergency Service unit responded to handle the weapon.
Short Film: Kensington’s Buzz-a-Rama 500
The Buzz-A-Rama 500 from Gorilla Face on Vimeo.
This is a great video about Buzz-a-Rama 500 in Kensington [69 Church Avenue]. Frank “Buzz” Perri opened the slot racing mecca in the early 1960′s. Perri owns the building so he’s been able to keep the shop open despite the onslaught of video games and his accountant’s desire for him to just rent out the space. It’s open on weekends and holidays. [via Kensington Brooklyn]
The Birdman of Carroll Gardens

Pardon Me for Asking Photo
Pardon Me For Asking profiles Tony The Birdman of Carroll Gardens:
Pardon Me For Asking: Carroll Gardens resident Tony has always owned birds. Lots of them. I remember years ago, on warm days, he would bring some of his feathery friends outside and delight his neighbors. My kids always referred to him as “the bird” man. When I told his wife Joanne, she just smiled. “Everyone call him that” she said. Read the full story
Kitchen Nightmares in Clinton Hill
Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares has been filming at Mojito in Clinton Hill for the past few weeks, and Filming in Brooklyn has some pictures of the foul-mouthed chef outside of the Cuban restaurant. I wonder what could be so nightmarish about Mojito- it’s always delicious, and it’s the only place I’ll pay over 20 bucks for four shrimp and enjoy every bite. The Kitchen Nightmare crew has been eating lunch at nearby Il Porto during the filming… maybe I’ll stick to pizza if what’s featured on the show isn’t so appetizing.
The Baseball Card Movie
Baseball commentary website YFSF posted a video featuring the Baseball Card Dugout on Court Street and 4th Place. According to the YouTube filmmaker, it’s “a movie about busting packs, baseball cards, being a collector and how value changes over time. Featuring Joe Rock and his store: the Baseball Card Dugout in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.” Is anyone out there a card collector? Joe Rock seems like a fun guy.
LICH at “Important Juncture”
Check today’s BHB post to learn what Long Island College Hospital interim president Dominick Stanzione told a group of supporters and donors at the reception honoring LICH’s 150th anniversary. It’s not quite the same doom and gloom we were hearing last year when Continuum Health Partners wanted to shut LICH’s obstetrics and pediatrics practices.
