Open Thread: Real Housewives of New York City Season 2 Premiere

real-housewives-of-new-york-hero-game

It’s here!  The second season of Real Housewives of New York City starring Cobble Hillbilly Alex McCord kicks off tonight on Bravo TV.   While some naysayers (we’re looking at you EW’s Ken Tucker) aren’t thrilled about the show’s return, we can at least look forward to the nabe getting some basic-cable-network-television time… right?

What do you think?  Are watching the show? Like the premiere?  Comment away!

Norah Jones joining the nabe

Brownstoner reports that Norah Jones will be our new neighbor.

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Norah Jones closed on an 1843 townhouse in Cobble Hill at the end of January. (We’re not telling you the address.) Jones paid an astonishing $4,990,000 for the restored 4,100-square-foot house, a price that’s hard to fathom even just a few months later (unless, maybe, it includes the parking lot next door). The just-below-asking price was agreed to in early December, well into the depths of the current financial crisis, after the 25-foot-wide house had been on the market for almost six months without a price reduction.

Music Video starring Cobble Hill

Thanks to the person who wrote in to us about this music video. According to our tipster, the “rappers” are Cobble Hill natives (I’m also thinking they’re current residents?) named Jonny Rooms and Dutch Master Spence. They hit up Cobble Hill Park and various stoops on and around Baltic – did they pass by your place?

The video can be viewed in its full size (and HD!) here.

Bar Great Harry to expand?

bar

Looks like I’m late to catch on to this news, but does anyone else know about Bar Great Harry’s expansion? Are they going to go into that back bathroom area? More space would certainly be good news!

Time Out shops Cobble Hill

Time Out‘s latest issue features a “Provision Quest” in Cobble Hill, where Chef Brad Farmerie (of Public and Double Crown) shows where to get the best food in the neighborhood. He’s got some pretty good tips and info, and loves “the funk of G. Esposito & Sons’ primary artifact—hot and sweet Italian links, spiced, stuffed and aged on premises” that permeates the space. Mmm.

Party Pants

simon

Someone’s flickr account posted some photos from the season finale taping of this season of the Real Housewives, which apparently took place at a fundraising gala for the arthritis community. Is it me, or does Simon van Kempen’s outfit scream “appropriate?” I wonder who his huggy buddy is…

The Real Housewives of New York City Season 2 premieres Tuesday night at 11PM on Bravo.

City fails to charge co-op residents water and sewage fees for 15 years

Looks like when the old Westminster church at 450 Clinton Street converted to residential apartments in 1993, the city never switched the property’s exempt status and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) failed to bill for water and sewage charges for almost 15 years. This was discovered in a recent audit, and even though the property has missed over $70,000 worth of payments, the city is legally prevented from pursuing bills more than four years old, only $23,235 of this $70,000-plus can be recouped. Ouch.

** UPDATE ** We are working on confirming the address of the audited building.

5 Questions

We’ll be starting a new weekly feature called 5 Questions where we talk to local leaders, celebrity residents, neighborhood heroes, etc, about their role in the nabe. If you have any suggestions or if there’s someone you’d like to see featured in the column, be sure to email tips AT cobblehillblog.com.
