Temporary photo studio set up on Atlantic Avenue

The Brooklyn Eagle reports that Caroll Taveras, a professional photographer whose work has appeared in major international publications, has opened The Photo Studio in a temporary storefront at 539 Atlantic Avenue. The Photo Studio is a place where people can stop by and have their photograph taken with a large format view camera, which is the tradition that was once popular in local portrait studios around the world. A 4×5 Polaroid portrait taken by the artist can be yours for only 5 bucks, through February 11th.

The Photo Studio, which will remain open through Feb. 11 before continuing on to Berlin, is a not-for-profit art project focused on documenting communities around the world. All photo participants will have the option to have their portrait posted on thephotostudio.org and will also be able to order 8×10 color prints for $20.

Store hours for portraits are noon to 8 pm Monday through Friday and noon to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Inauguration Events around Brooklyn

There are lots of events going on around the neighborhood in honor of the Presidential Inauguration of  Barack Obama. The Bell House (149 7th Street, Gowanus) will host an inaugural ball in the evening with performances and special guests. Tickets are $75, and proceeds will go to P.S. 261. Brooklyn Academy of Music is hosting a free screening of the live event at BAM Rose Cinemas (tickets will be available at 11:00 am). My bet is, any bar or restaurant with a television will be showing the events from DC. Check out mcbrooklyn’s map of Inauguration events planned for tomorrow.

Dr. Maddox Doesn’t Work Here Anymore

Dr. Walter Maddox doesn’t work here anymore.  Over the years, he kept threatening to retire, but I don’t think anyone took him seriously.  I didn’t.  I thought he would always be there, especially during the years when I had a tribe of three cats.  I would arrive early and sit in the crowded waiting room with the other anxious pet owners. Do something over the long weekend

It’s going to be a cold one, but at least it’ll be a long one (for those of you who have off for Martin Luther King, Jr. day on Monday). Why not plan to do something with it? “Make it a day on, not a day off.”

New York Times Remembers Jimmy the Peddler

As previously reported, Cobble Hill lost Vincent “Jimmy the Peddler” Cincotta last week. Today, the New York Times remembers him and the bygone era he represented:

New York Times: Cobble Hill Peddler’s Death…: One of New York’s last horse and cart street peddlers died last Thursday at the age of 82. Vincent Cincotta, also known as “Jimmy the Peddler,” gave up his horse and cart almost 40 years ago, in 1970, and opened Jim and Andy’s grocery store in a space he and his partner had been renting as a storage area. Since then, Jim and Andy’s has been a permanent fixture on Court Street, known for its basic décor of linoleum and crates in an neighborhood where bars became bodegas and then restaurants. This was a pre-Whole Foods approach.

Brownstone Brooklyn about to feel the real estate bust?

brownstone

The Brooklyn Paper reports that the real estate boom that Brownstone Brooklyn has become quite comfortable with, might go bust very soon.

The so-called Brownstone Belt that binds Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Park Slope — saw their average sales price increase slightly from $786,189 to $786,789.

But that barely perceptible gain came at a time when the number of sales dipped 23.3 percent, plummeting from 516 sales in third-quarter of 2008 to 396 in the fourth quarter of the year.

Curbed put together a great comparison of a traffic control box in Carroll Gardens and on in Greenpoint. Thought it was worthy of sharing.

Provence en Boite advertises weekday specials

provence1

Provence en Boite has put up a big ole sign advertising weekday dinner specials, perhaps in an attempt to stave off the closure that so many of its fellow Cobble Hill eateries have become victim to. I’m not sure if they’re new specials or if Provence is just advertising them more openly, but there’s a fairly legible close-up after the jump. Continue Reading →
