Cobble Hill Association Memorial Bike Ride
On Sunday, January 4, the Cobble Hill Association will be holding a memorial bike ride in memory of all those who have been killed in bicycle accidents over the past year. The ride will start in Brooklyn and end in lower Manhattan.
Margaret Palca Bakes Court Street location closes down; Palca badmouths Court Street
The Brooklyn Paper reports that Margaret Palca Bakes on Court Street will shut down after a year and a half of business. Businesses are closing down left and right due to the current state of the economy, but Palca chose to blame what she calls the “has-been” quality of Court Street:
“I had such a wrong impression [about Court Street],” said Palca. “It’s just such a ‘has-been’ kind of street. I hoped it would be more popular and more busy, but it just hasn’t been.”
In the words of Jennifer Aniston, that is very uncool. I’ve stepped into Margaret Palca Bakes a ton of times – the store never had anything appealing and the salad bar was quite meager. Perhaps that is what Palca should blame for the closing down of her business, and stop pointing fingers at our beloved Court Street.
Legal hacker collective in Downtown Brooklyn
An article in the New York Times puts a spotlight on a hacker collective called NYC Resistor, which has occupied its space on Bridge Street since the summer of 2007. The “creative community for nerds” includes former Project Runways contestant Diana Eng, who is one of seven women in the collective.
The result is a kind of frat house for modern-day mad scientists. Outside the collective’s home is the bustling Fulton Street Mall, where vendors hawk sneakers and bundles of incense. Inside the converted laboratory, circuit boards, gadgets and spare parts overflow from every shelf. A minifridge near the entrance is stocked with beer. Members eager to quench their thirst can also consult Bar Bot, a silvery drink-dispensing robot that resembles the Jetsons’ maid, Rosie.
Keri Russell spotted at NYSC Cobble Hill
I adore Keri Russell. Ever since her days on the Disney Club and Malibu Shores (and of course, Emerald Cove, which I’m not sure anyone will remember), when she let people [i.e. me] know that it was cool to have big, curly hair, she’s always held a special place in my heart. Then she went on to play Felicity, the most awesome television character EVER. I’ve seen her a few times around the neighborhood, and today I had the pleasure of working out right next to her. I would have felt like a total creepster taking a picture and decided against it, but I somehow managed to get one as I was trying to switch the camera off on my phone (damn touchscreen). It’s not very good, but you can see it after the jump. Continue Reading →
Are you a real Brooklynite?

With a quiet Smith Street and suitcases being wheeled to the F, the holiday season serves as a reminder of all the neighbors who were born elsewhere and flock to their hometowns around this time of year. Friday’s Brian Lehrer show touched upon this matter: for those of you who moved to Brooklyn from elsewhere, what makes you a real Brooklynite? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
