Groinstrong Benefit a Smash

The Groinstrong Benefit at The Bell House on Thursday night to help Jonah Eller-Isaacs defray some of his cancer-related medical costs was a smashing success.  The Brooklyn born musician/former Magnetic Field bartender and honest-to-goodness altruist is more accustomed to being on the other side of helping others. As his (and our) pal Steve Reynolds noted on the invitation to the event a few weeks ago:

Throughout his 29 years, Jonah has championed the healing power of music. Over a six-month period in 2004, he traversed Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, documenting music’s crucial role in helping Africans deal with HIV/AIDS. Once back in the States, he shared his inspiring findings through countless lectures nationwide. Jonah came to New York City in 2006 and found his niche in the Brooklyn musical community. A year later he joined the staff of Musicians on Call, a nonprofit organization which puts performers bedside at local hospitals.

Jonah thanks everyone who attended and helped out on his blog:

what an incredible night that was!

it was a dream come true – a giant party in my honor with live music and karaoke and people from every walk of my life, from high school and college and california and minnesota and new york. and i didn’t really have to do anything to organize it! i was so impressed by the turnout – honestly, with all the love last night, i wouldn’t have cared if we had raised five hundred dollars.

and from what i heard as i was leaving, it was more like FIVE THOUSAND. just crazy!

BookCourt Gets Bigger

The expansion of BookCourt [163 Court Street] has been completed.  The Brooklyn Paper reports:

The 27-year-old bookseller, between Pacific and Dean streets, roughly doubled its size when construction finished a month ago on a rear, sun-splashed addition. The new space freed up clutter in the front of the business and provided a larger area for readings and potentially book club meetings.

“It gives us much more flexibility and people seem to love it,” said co-owner Mary Gannett.

Coming to Cobble Hill: Coed Soccer

From the CHB Inbox comes word of a Coed Soccer league taking shape in Cobble Hill:

We just wanted to let you know that NY Coed Soccer is starting the first coed soccer league in the neighborhood.

We’ve been running Leagues in Manhattan and Williamsburg for nearly five years and we’re now delighted to offer an opportunity to play in an area where we have lived & where we are regularly out and about.

Our motto is: It doesn’t matter whether you play like Maradona or Madonna, Mia Hamm or a slice of ham. Because in the NY Coed Soccer League, where glory is only a kick away, everybody is welcome.

The league will have two open divisions (Mondays and Wednesdays) at the International School on Baltic between Smith and Court. Beginner to advanced players are welcome. And you don’t need to be part of a
team to register. We will assign individuals to teams, as well as ensuring friends are placed on the same roster.

For more information, people can view our web site at www.nycoedsoccer.com – to link to the Brooklyn leagues, they can use this link: http://www.nycoedsoccer.com/WinterLeagues.html

Yemeni-Italian Restaurant coming to Atlantic Ave?

null

After posting the above image at my other blog, I received a tip about Reginella, our new Atlantic Ave neighbors. It seems that the same owners and chefs from Saana, the Yemeni restaurant that formerly occupied this space, are behind this new Italian venture. While I’m hoping for interesting “fusion” food – I’m sure it will fall into the same category as Bread for Jam, Busy Chef, and F. Martinella. Blah.

Anyone know what’s happening next door in the old Ben and Jerry’s spot? There are gift baskets on display in the windows. Sahadi’s used the space for food prep during the Antic, so my money’s on them expanding (at least for the holidays).

Marty to Host LICH Public Hearing

Borough President Marty Markowitz and Special Assistant to the Borough President Yvonne Graham have invited all interested people to attend a public hearing on the future of Long Island College Hospital next Monday evening, November 10, at the courtroom in Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, from 6:30 to 8:30. As we have previously reported (see here, here, here, and here), the Board and managers of LICH have proposed to close its obstetrics and pediatrics departments and dental clinic, along with some satellite clinics in public schools, and to sell part of the Hospital’s physical plant, in order to stave off a claimed financial crisis.
