Save Karyn’s Pooch Has Happy Birthday

Pretty in the City Photo

Pretty in the City Photo

Back in the day (like 2002), Cobble Hillbilly Karyn Bosnak started a website called Save Karyn, to raise funds to pay off her credit card debt.  Each day, she posted useful financial advice with a witty twist.  Heck, even BHB/CHB Publisher Homer Fink donated a buck to her cause.  Flash forward to today and Karyn is a published author (Save Karyn: One Shopaholic’s Journey to Debt and Back) and cool neighbor.  She writes this week about bringing her dog, “Beverly”, to Monster Mutt for some birthday cheer: Continue Reading →

Raccoons in Cobble Hill?

Walking home Saturday night, I witnessed a massive raccoon walking along Pacific Street and cross Clinton. Are they pretty common in the area?

BQE Repairs Could Mess Up Park

Remember the BQE Triple Cantilever Project? Of course you do.  Well, it’s going to happen and could have an impact on Brooklyn Bridge Park.  CHA President/Homer’s cousin Jeff “Hussein” Strabone writes on the organization’s website about a meeting with CB6 and DOT officials to be held Thursday night: Continue Reading →

Marty: AG “All Over” Continuum on LICH.

At this afternoon’s rally to protest Continuum Health Partners’ proposal to close obstetrics and pediatrics at Long Island College Hospital, Borough President Marty Markowitz (photo) castigated Continuum for its failure to open its books to himself and other public officials, or to work with those officials, community leaders, and LICH medical staff to try to solve the Hospital’s fiscal problems without denying the community essential services. He said he had spoken with State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who had assured him that the AG’s office is “all over” the issue. Continue Reading →

CHB’s EJ Profiled on Midtown Lunch

We love Midtown Lunch, if only because it’s run by a fellow radio refugee.  Today they give us one more reason to heart them – a profile of CHB’s own EJ:

Midtown Lunch: Favorite Kind of Food: I’m an equal opportunity eater. If forced to pick one category though, I’d say pork. BBQ’d pork (preferably ribs from Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, AL).

Least Favorite Kind of Food: See above. I’d be a perfect judge for Iron Chef as there is very little that I don’t enjoy eating. However, if forced to make a list, it would probably only include eggplant. This year’s CSA also has me currently sick of green beans.

Two neighborhood faves to add bars

Eater has word of a new bar from the owners of Chestnut, Chestnut Bar, opening at 271 Smith St. next door to the original. Regarding the new bar, “the space features a “U-shaped bar, library ladder, reclaimed beveled glass church door, and tall snack tables made of Chestnut wood recycled from the former bar in the neighboring restaurant space.” If their mixologists are as talented as the chefs next door, this should be worth checking out.

Also, Brownstoner has pictures of the newly expanded Book Court book store on Court Street. Their website has details and more photos of the expansion. While we here at CHB look forward to the “dedicated events space for readings & performances,” and “triple the amount of children’s books,” I’m most interested in the “small cafe & bar with an accompanying outdoor garden.”

New restaurant coming to Henry Street?

Henry Street is becoming quite a restaurant row these days, and it looks like something new might be joining Hibino on the block between Atlantic and Pacific. As I mentioned earlier this week on Chowhound, the old television repair shop seems slated to become a bar and restaurant. A liquor license is pending for “Henro Jones LLC” at 329 Henry St.

Hopefully they keep the old school sign, and bring delicious food and drink to the neighborhood!
