Friends of musician/writer/former Magnetic Field bartender Jonah Eller-Isaacs are throwing a benefit concert for him at the Bell House [149 7th Street] on November 13th.   Eller-Isaacs, known to his friends as not only a fun guy to be around but an actual living breathing altruist,  has been battling cancer this year and his medical bills are piling up.

If you can’t be at the show, buy a “Groinstrong bracelet” to show your support.

Steve “King of All Live Band Karoke” Reynolds posted information on Facebook about the show: Continue Reading →

Axe Falls for 100 at LICH; More Layoffs May Follow.

The Brooklyn Paper reports that 100 employees of Long Island College Hospital were notified today that they are being laid off. In addition, the Hospital is eliminating another fifty currently unfilled positions.

Many more layoffs will follow if the New York State Department of Health approves the application of Continuum Health Partners, which manages LICH, to close the Hospital’s obstetrics and pediatrics departments and its dental clinic.

At a rally one week ago, borough President Marty Markowitz and other local political, civic and religious leaders decried Continuum’s proposed layoffs and closure of departments.

New Neighbor: F. Martinella Deli

McBrooklyn reports on the new F. Matinella Deli at 117/119 Court Street:

Mc Brooklyn: Yesterday Brooklyn’s new Boar’s Head “food laboratory,” named F. Martinella, opened for its first day of business at 117/119 Court Street in Downtown Brooklyn, across the street from the movie theater.

While we haven’t tasted anything yet, the staff seems friendly and it looks like it’s going to attract quite the lunch crowd — lots of lunch meats (naturally), a variety of sandwich cheeses, cakes and cookies, coffee.

The “F. Martinella” name was decoded on the Lost City blog: Boar’s Head CEO is Robert S. Martin; their President is Michael Martella.

Nabe Newbie, Calexico, Wins Vendy Cup

Saturday afternoon 5 meat carts and 4 dessert carts competed for street meat excellence at the Vendy Awards hosted by the Urban Justice Center at Dumbo’s Tobacco Factory. The local area had several connections – the winner, Soho-based Calexico Tex-Mex is opening a restaurant in the old Schnack location on Union St; the dessert truck winner, The Treats Truck has their bakery on Columbia Street; and a finalist, Soler Dominican, is a regular at the Red Hook Ballfields on weekends.
A couple more photos below: Continue Reading →

Electric Company Scammers Out in Nabe

A group of douchebags errr scammers are trolling around our area trying to dupe folks into switching to their crappy electric company from Con Edison.

The Gowanus Lounge writes: Last week, we featured utility scammers working around Greenwood Heights courtesy of warning from Aaron Brashear of Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights. We had this story and this follow up the very same day. In those cases, reps from IDT Energy were switching people from Con Ed without their consent. (We don’t have a love affair with Con Ed, but a scam is not a way to escape their clutches. For full details onthe IDT scam head over to Consumerist, which has been chronicling this crap in great detail.) Well, it’s going on in more places and is a HUGE story. In any case, there are now reports coming via BoCoCa Parents of other energy scammers at work.

A Cobble Hillbilly tells GL:

we too had someone come knocking at our door in Cobble Hill mid-day a week or two ago (and we live in an apartment building, so someone let him in) saying through the peephole that he was “from the electric company” and needed to see a copy of our ConEd bill to tell us how we could save $. Needless to say, I did not open the door (thinking- “Why the heck would ConEd need to come to my home to see a copy of my bill?! Must be some strange scam.”)…It was pretty creepy when it happened.

Eagle on BQE DOT Update

The Brooklyn Eagle sheds some light on the upcoming (as in 7 years from now or so) BQE Cantilever Project:

Brooklyn Eagle: One won’t see any physical work on “fixing up” the Downtown Brooklyn portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) and its Brooklyn Heights “cantilever” for some seven to 10 more years, but the long process of talking about it has begun.

Last week, members of the state Department of Transportation met with members of the Transportation Committee of Community Board 6 and others to begin that “long process.”

CHA Prexy Jeff Strabone adds on the org’s blog:

During the Q & A, he noted what he [Peter King] called ‘opportunities for interference’ between the park and the roadwork. If the DOT winds up entirely replacing the triple-cantilever with a new triple-cantilever or an entirely new covered roadway, two options that will be considered, how will the materials be delivered other than by barge and through the park? King said he did not know. Stay tuned.

LICH ER Vending Machine Options

With all of the controversy surrounding LICH these days, it’s a shame that some of their positives are being ignored. Like their ability to stock a pretty impressive ER vending machine. The registration desk doesn’t make change though, so be sure to pack plenty of singles.
