Booze & Books: NYC Lit Crawl Coming To Brooklyn For First Time May 19

The Brooklyn Lit Crawl beer-and-book festival, which stumbles through 13 Cobble Hill, Carroll Garden and Brooklyn Heights venues on Saturday May 19, 6-8 p.m., will comprise cocktails, trivia contests, book readings and special events along the way.

Venues include Zombie Hut (273 Smith Street), Knit Lit (253 Smith), People’s Republic of Brooklyn (247 Smith), BookCourt (163 Court Street), Last Exit (136 Atlantic Avenue) and the After Party at 8 p.m. at 61 Local (61 Bergen Street). Continue Reading →

‘Bayou n’ Brooklyn’ Cajun Festival This Weekend In Red Hook

This weekend, the Bayou n’ Brooklyn Music Festival will fill the air with the sounds of Cajun fiddles and Zydeco rub-boards at the Jalopy Music Theatre at 315 Columbia Street in Red Hook. From Friday through Sunday, featured acts will include music & dance from Cajun Hall of Famer Jesse Lége & Bayou Brew (also creating Saturday’s Gumbo pot), Johnny Ace & Sidewalk Zydeco, Krewe de La Rue, Empty Bottle Ramblers and Offshore Aces. Stay until the wee hours for back-to-back bands and contests. If you’ve ever wanted to play rub-board with a band, here’s your chance.

Most Walkable Nabes In NYC: Brooklyn Heights & Cobble Hill

No surprise to those of us in the know, but hipster pub The L Magazine notes that Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill are “the most walkable neighborhoods in Brooklyn,” according to a study by Walk Score published on website Slate.

The webbie bases its “walk scores” on the amount and accessibility of amenities, including restaurants, movie theater and schools. New York City is the most walkable out of 50 cities surveyed, with a score of 85.3 out of 100, which The L Word notes was knocked down by “unwalkable” Staten Island. Continue Reading →

FASCINATING: 1940 Census Data Reveals Who Lived In Your Digs

Ever wondered who was cooking pot roast on your antique stove in 1940? Who hid that stamp beneath the floorboards when you were gutting your Pacific Street coop bedroom? How much that Degraw Street apartment cost to rent 70 years ago? Now’s your chance to find out. In partnership with Archives.com, the U.S. National Archives released Census records from 1940 online on April 2—comprising 3.8 million images scanned from some 4,000 rolls of microfilm.

The website offers access to maps and hand-written info about every known address in all 48 states in the Union, allowing you to find census maps and descriptions to locate an enumeration district, browse census images to locate any household interviewed in the 1940 Census and then save and/or download images. Residential Brokerage Aptsandlofts.com Joins Court Street Corridor

Residential brokerage Aptsandlofts.com is opening a storefront in Cobble Hill, its first outside of its Williamsburg, Brooklyn base. The 2,000-square-foot retailer will launch by the end of June at 236 Court Street, says Crain’s New York Business.

Aptsandlofts.com’s founder and president David Maundrell says that the new office is part of his plan to double the size of the 45-agent firm, with room in the Cobble Hill location for around 40 agents. Continue Reading →

76th Precinct’s E-Mail on Hurricane #Irene Evacuation

The 76th Precinct has issued this statement regarding any questions or concerns citizens may have regarding evacuation from low lying areas here:

There have been numerous calls to the precinct inquiring as to whether or not they need to evacuate their homes. As the mayor has stated repeatedly if you live in “Zone A” you are in a mandatory evacuation zone. Much of the RedHook area is in “Zone A”. If there are any questions as to what zone you reside in go to nyc.gov and click on hurricaine info.
Inquiries can be made to the 76 Precinct at (718) 834-3211, if that number is busy try (718) 834-3231. The mayor has requested that evacuees ride out the storm with friends or family. For those requiring shelter, the nearest evacuation centers are NYC Technical College located at 300 Jay Street, John Jay HS located at 237 4th Avenue , Brooklyn Tecnical HS located at 29 Fort Greene Place and Cobble Hill High School at 347 Baltic Street.
There will be increased patrols by the 76, to deter crime and aid those in need thoughout the duration of the storm.
Those requiring routine Police assistance are asked to call the numbers above, as well as utilizing the 311 system. As always, emergency situations should be called into 911. Be safe.

76th Precinct Will Register Your Electronics Wednesday

Tomorrow (8/17) from noon to 6pm the 76th Precinct will be enrolling local residents’ electronic devices in its Crime Prevention program. Take a bite out of crime:

Millman’s Office Offers Free Osteoporosis Screening Friday

In cooperation with Long Island College Hospital, Assemblywoman Joan Millman is offering free bone density tests to screen for osteoporosis this Friday, May 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at her district office, 341 Smith Street (at Carroll Street). To make an appointment (slots are limited and going fast) please call her office at 718-246-4889. Assemblywoman Millman will be present the entire time, so you may take the opportunity to express your political concerns to her as you have your bone density checked.

Allegedly Taking Candy from Babies

The NYTimes reports that a Former PTA Treasurer at Brooklyn School Is Indicted in Theft of $100,000. Providence Hogan, former treasurer of the PS 29 PTA and who is also the owner of Providence Day Spa, allegedly took the money for personal expenses including rent and fertility treatments.

PS 29 is a highly regarded local school that offers many extracurricular activities funded through the PTA. To Cobble Hill parents, what do you think could have been provided with this extra $100,000?
