Anti-Semitic fliers linked to Kansas Baptist church

There may be a link between the anti-Semitic leaflets that were handed out in Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill on Tuesday and this weekend’s anti-gay, anti-Jewish rallies being organized by the militant Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, according to an investigation being conducted by the 76th Precinct.

Brooklyn Paper: Handwritten notes reading “Kill Jews” in black marker were found at the corner of Clinton and President streets and along Atlantic Avenue between Smith and Boerum streets.

Sgt. Vinny Marrone of the 76th Precinct said police are investigating whether the hate message were done to promote Saturday’s rally by the Westboro Baptist Church at the Kane Street Synagogue at nearby Tompkins Place.

“But this also happens every year during the Jewish holidays,” Marrone added. “Someone always wants to ruin their good time when they’re celebrating.”

Tree branch falls on man in Carroll Park

This in from the 76th Precinct:

At approximately 4:40 pm this afternoon, a large tree branch fell from a tree inside Carroll Park.  The branch fell in the vicinity of the  the World War I memorial, on the Carroll Street side of the park.  1 man received what we believe are very minor injuries, and was removed to the hospital for evaluation.  Fortunately, no other people were injured, and there were no serious injuries.  Specialists from the Parks Department are already on the scene evaluating the condition of that tree, as well as all of the other trees in the park, and will take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of park-goers.

76th and 84th Precinct Police Blotter – 6/19/09

bugleblotterThis week’s blotters got sidelined in the hubbub of breaking Busted Chef news, but not forgotten. Here, finally, are your blotters:

Cops arrested two punks for stealing iPods and cellphones from two victims — the first of whom identified the punks during the second crime. The first incident happened at 11 pm on June 8 just outside the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station, when eight perps surrounded two guys and asked to use their cellphones. Two punks then hit the victims in the head, grabbed their backpacks, and raced away southbound on Hoyt Street. Cops came to the scene and drove around the neighborhood with the two victims, looking out for the perps.

An hour later: victory. As the cops and victims were canvassing, they discovered the hoodlums at it again on Livingston Street, between Bond Street and Hanover Place, where they had just asked a victim to use his phone. One perp said he had a knife and the second said he had a gun, so the victim handed over his phone without a fight. The cops jumped out of the squad car and chased the perps, arresting two of the three perps, ages 14 and 15.

Weekly crime blotter: 6/9/09

bugleblotter-300x171

There were several robberies in the subway this week — and a small victory for Brooklynites who cars have been stolen borough-wide. For more neighborhood crimes, see Brooklyn Heights Blog.

First up, cops recovered one of the stolen cars from last week’s BHB blotter. A perp stole a man’s Honda sedan from the corner of Adams and Sands street on May 26, but cops found it two days later on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene. The only thing missing was the car’s radio and spare key, and cops said the thieves didn’t break any windows, locks, or the ignition.

On June 3, just before 4 pm, a punk reached over to a fellow G-train straphanger and snatched her iPhone from her hands. The perp then darted out of the train at the Bergen Street station.

A churchgoing thief stole $3,500 from a woman’s purse at a Bergen Street church on June 2, just before 5 pm. The victim told cops she left her purse on a table in the church’s lobby, which is between Nevins Street and Third Avenue, but when she turned around five minutes later, the cash was gone.

A perp stole a rented car on June 1 that was parked on Dean Street, scoring — however inadvertently — a brand new swing set that the driver had just purchased for his toddler. The victim told cops he left the car between Third and Fourth avenues at 2 pm, but when he came back four hours later, everything was gone. The perp also acquired the man’s car seat.

76th and 84th Precinct Police Blotter 6/3/09

bugleblotterIn an incident sure to haunt you, an aggressive panhandler attacked a 13-year-old boy on Smith Street just after 8 am on May 26. The boy was walking to school along Smith Street, when he passed the panhandler between Wyckoff and Bergen streets. The man asked the boy for money, who said he didn’t have any and kept walking. That’s when the perp grabbed the boy’s arm, held it tightly, and said, “You are lying. Now, give me money.” The boy pulled out a dollar bill from his pocket and handed it over, but the man replied, “You have more money than that.” The boy ran away and went to school, and told cops the man was black and about 5’5”, and weighed 160 pounds.
