Park Slope Coop Hippies Pick Fight with Barney’s Coop

Flickr photo by langestuff

Leave it to the hippies at the Park Slope Coop to spoil everyone’s excitement over the Barney’s Coop scheduled to open at 194 Atlantic Avenue.  The Brooklyn Paper reports that PSC GM Joe Holtz claims the tony clothing store is misusing the term “coop” and tarnishing the market’s image in the process.

While Holtz claims he hasn’t decided whether he’ll sue Barney’s — he claims their use of the term is also a violation of New York State law — Barney’s reps say that they’ve had the trademark on their store name for a quarter of a century and that it’s not an issue.

Lawyers interviewed by the paper were split on whether the PSC has a legal leg to stand on.

Talk of the Town: Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill Rated 4th in NY Mag Nabe Ratings

We here at Cobble Hill Blog might play second fiddle to our big brother and well-established, respected community forum Brooklyn Heights Blog, but today Cobble Hill rides high! New York Magazine’s Neighborhood Issue places Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill as the fourth most-livable hood in the city, behind Park Slope, the Lower East Side and Sunnyside:

Squeezed between the similarly charming (and high-ranking) neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill offers the best of both of those worlds. It’s one stop closer to Manhattan on the F train than the former, and $200 to $300 cheaper per month than the latter. Smith and Court Streets are among the most interesting and diverse retail corridors in the city, and the housing stock is superb, with beautiful and well-maintained nineteenth-century homes and plenty of modern amenities.

Brooklyn Taco coverage

Huffington Post.

Huffington Post.

If you weren’t able to make it to the Brooklyn Taco Experiment at the Bell House this past weekend, check out the HuffPo‘s photos and coverage. Sounds like it was a delicious and carnivore-heavy event. Mark your calendars tentatively for April for the next Experiment event.

Union Market opening on Monday

It’s official: Union Market’s third location at 288 Court Street will open its doors at 10am on Monday, December 21st. The 4,000 sq. ft. store – designed and constructed using green building practices – is significantly larger than the two Park Slope locations (woohoo! We have Trader Joe’s and a huge Union Market… I guess Park Slope can keep hoping that Whole Foods finally gets built). Be sure to check out Union Market next week for your holiday needs – prime meats, fresh fish delivered seven times a week, and restaurant-quality prepared foods.

cubana-cafe-park-slopeCubana Cafe, one of my favorite cheap eats in the nabe, is now open in Park Slope on the corner of Sixth Avenue and St. Marks Place. Pretty much the same menu, gratis plantain chips, and tasty drinks as the Smith Street location. If you’re looking for a change in scenery, check it out.

Community Board 6, which represents Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook, came in second to Community Board 10 (Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights) for recycling. The statistics released by the Department of Sanitation state that 59% of CB10′s residences and business recycle, as compared with CB6′s 55%. C’mon folks- we can top Bay Ridge!

Union Market coming to Court Street

Union Market

The above photo is an ad on the back of the latest issue of Edible BrooklynUnion Market, the specialty food shop with two location in Park Slope, will soon be open in the nabe. Judging from a map, it looks like 288 Court Street is the retail location that’s been empty for a few years (with the faded Blockbuster sign on the outside). Do you think we could use a large specialty food store like Union Market, or do the smaller ones we already have do the job?
