And we thought the bedbug epidemic had bitten the dust. But according to a notice sent to parents of The Carroll School Tuesday, the pesky little critters are still gnawing in Carroll Gardens… or at least one is. The Patch reports that a notice was sent home with kids alerting them that a single bedbug—yes, as in one—was found on the premises of P.S. 58 at 330 Smith Street. Continue Reading →

CHB Gets Results! LICH Playground Swing Seat Replaced
Last week, thanks to a reader, we reported the long-standing damage to a swing seat at the smaller LICH playground. LICH’s publicist has lived up to her name by giving us a “Zippi” response, with good news:
Hi – it’s Zippi from the Downstate LICH. I was away on vacation last week, and only just now saw the post and chatter about the torn swing seat. It’s been replaced (see photos) and I also gave out our special email address for issues of this sort (downstateLICHinfo@downstate.edu – which I personally monitor). I posted a reply to the original story. Will people who saw that post in their inbox also see my note that the problem has been rectified? I want them to see that hyper-local media works: an issue was raised via the website, it was noted, corrective action was taken, and the public has the satisfaction of knowing they effected a positive change in the community.
Thank you, Ms. Dvash, for your response, seeing that the problem was rectified, and your kind words about CHB.
Swing at LICH Playground Unsafe
We’ve received this message from a reader:
This swing (photo) at the “little” LICH playground on Henry Street (corner of Amity) has been broken for about a year. It’s very frustrating because small kids don’t realize it, try to sit on it, and it’s obviously very unsafe. I’ve seen about a hundred tantrums where parents are prying their disappointed kids off of it. I wonder why it hasn’t been repaired after all this time and I’d like to call some attention to it, is possible. I think many, many families will agree with me that this needs to be addressed at this beloved park for small kids.

P.S. 29 Outcast – Providence Hogan
In an NYTimes article entitled, “The Outcast of Brownstone Brooklyn” a detailed examination of the negotiations concerning restitution in the now notorious PS 29 embezzlement scandal is provided.
Putting aside Ms. Providence Hogan’s admission to stealing $100,000 from the PS 29 PTA to pay for rent, for her home and business, as well as fertility treatments, the question remains, when and if restitution will occur. Alternatively, should she go to jail? What do you think? Continue Reading →
Allegedly Taking Candy from Babies
The NYTimes reports that a Former PTA Treasurer at Brooklyn School Is Indicted in Theft of $100,000. Providence Hogan, former treasurer of the PS 29 PTA and who is also the owner of Providence Day Spa, allegedly took the money for personal expenses including rent and fertility treatments.
PS 29 is a highly regarded local school that offers many extracurricular activities funded through the PTA. To Cobble Hill parents, what do you think could have been provided with this extra $100,000?

P.S. 58 to Unveil New Playground
On Thursday, November 4th, P.S. 58 The Carroll School will unveil its newly renovated playground at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Special guests and local officials will be honored, including Borough President Marty Markowitz and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. Festivities are open to the public and will begin at 9:45am at the corner of Smith and Carroll Streets.
The reconstructed schoolyard has new courts for basketball, tennis, roller hockey and track. There are multi-color play grids, chess tables, and an outdoor stage for performances and improvised games. The schoolyard was designed through a collaboration with Out2Play, a non-profit organization that refurbishes playgrounds in New York City.
