Changes Coming Quickly to Pier 6 Approach

Our friends at the Cobble Hill Association have been pushing for changes to the entry points of the exciting new Pier 6 playground, and their efforts are proving successful. This just in from State Senator Daniel Squadron’s office – the DOT has suggested the following improvements:

-“Stop Here on Red” sign on Atlantic Avenue at the eastbound approach to the on-ramp, to communicate to drivers that they do not have a free left turn when the light ahead is red and the pedestrian indication across the ramp is WALK.

-“Turning Vehicles Yield to Pedestrians” sign on Atlantic Avenue at the westbound approach to the on-ramp, to emphasize  to drivers that  they must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

-Conducting a traffic study to determine if further signal or regulation changes that will reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts at this location are feasible.  Additional recommendations will be shared publicly in near future.

- Evaluating medium term opportunities for more significant reconfigurations to the street network around Pier 6 that will assist with bicycle and pedestrian park access, including the intersection of Columbia Street and Atlantic Avenue, and Atlantic Avenue west of  Columbia Street.

Will it be enough? Let’s just hope the changes take effect before a dreadful accident takes place.

MTA Doomsday Cuts Take Effect

The MTA’s dire slashing of services across the city has hit Brooklyn buses especially hard. The Brooklyn Paper points out today that the borough has lost 298 bus stops out of a total 570! What did Brooklyn ever do wrong?

How have the cuts affected you?

PMFA Covers B71 Protest

Many thanks to our friends at Pardon Me For Asking for their thorough coverage of yesterday’s protest to save the B71 bus. As a regular rider on the route, this reporter hopes the protestors’ voices will be heard.

Yesterday afternoon, local residents took part in a rally to save the B71 bus, which will be eliminated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority on June 27th as part of the agency’s cost saving measure. The B71 connects this community to Park Slope and is used by many school children, the elderly and handicapped…

The B71 will stop running on Monday. It is unlikely that the MTA will change its mind before then. However, it was impressive to see such a large group come out to protect the elimination of a bus route. And maybe, as Councilman Brad Lander told the protesters, it may not be a done deal yet.

Brooklyn Paper Tests Dangerous Pier 6 Approaches

Yesterday the Cobble Hill Association demanded safer pedestrian space in approaching the uber-popular mega-playground that is the new Pier 6. Now the Brooklyn Paper has gone to see for themselves, and it’s not pretty:

Approaching the pier along Atlantic Avenue is particularly formidable, as pedestrians must cross exit ramps to the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway, encountering eastbound vehicles on Atlantic turning left to get on the highway, along with right-turning cars and trucks.

And at the northern terminus of Columbia Street, a right-on-red signal that allows cars to turn east onto Atlantic is virtually ignored, as vehicles roll through what has now become a major crossing nexus.

With cars and trucks coming from every direction, park-users are befuddled.

With the vuvuzelas of the community buzzing, it shouldn’t be long before the NYC DOT puts safety measures in place. God forbid something awful should happen in the meantime. Shouldn’t they think of these things BEFORE they open a $55 million playground?

Save the B71 Bus Rally on Wednesday

At the corner of Union and Smith Sts. this Wednesday, June 23rd at 5 pm, there will be a rally in support of the B71 bus. The line is a vital link between Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens and the cultural heart of Brooklyn – the Library, the Brooklyn Museum, and of course the natural splendor of Prospect Park and the Botanic Garden.

Come out and let the MTA know that they can’t take away our bus!

Cobble Hill Association Demands Safe Pier 6 Approach

The CHA has called for much-needed safety improvements in the crosswalks leading to the new park and playgrounds at Pier 6:

The Cobble Hill Association has long supported a completely public park with active recreation, and delights seeing neighborhood children using the brand new Pier 6. However, there have been many concerns from the community regarding access to the park. The Atlantic Avenue – Columbia/Furman Street intersection has long needed traffic-calming measures, and now the situation is severe.  Children dart across the swath of asphalt without any pedestrian refuge islands, and stroller moms must wheel carriages hurriedly to avoid speeding traffic from Furman’s excessive road width, while also contending with entering/exiting traffic on the BQE.

Eagle Eyes ‘Fix the Ditch’ Workshop

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle was on hand yesterday at the first of four community workshops to discuss ‘Fix the Ditch’ – an effort to “ameliorate the pollution, noise, vibration, and dust produced by the trench” of the nabe-dividing Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

…Workshop participants were assigned a small-group station and asked to consider the many photos attached to one wall labeled “Inspiration Board.” The photos ran the gamut from ancient pedestrian bridges to modern highways softened by green planted buffers. Sustainability elements included sponge greenery intended to soak up storm water and a highway surrounded by solar energy panels.

‘Sponge greenery?’ Sounds lovely, and much more appealing than what we have at present…

Fix the Ditch: BQE Enhancement Workshop Tonight

It’s time to confront the enormous Expressway that runs like a concrete river through our neighborhood. Tonight is the first in a series of workshops to build a dialogue between residents affected by the entrenched highway and the designers who will be working to transform this nabe-splitting byway. “Designers will solicit advice, input and local experience with this section of the BQE” in order to “improve the pedestrian environment between Atlantic and Hamilton Avenues.” Well, that would be lovely.

Download the informational flyer here.

Workshop Details:
Tuesday, May 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Long Island College Hospital, Avram Conference Center
339 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201

Join your neighbors at our first design workshop so we can work together to improve the connection between the Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and Columbia Street Waterfront neighborhoods.

Sidewalk Extensions underway at Clinton & Atlantic

Sure to make one of the noisiest blocks of Cobble Hill even louder, it appears that the DOT is finally extending the sidewalks at the southern side of Atlantic Ave at Clinton St. I can’t wait for the honking that’ll come with slowed cars making sharp turns!
Perhaps we can at least score some sidewalk corn in the deal?

The F train is going to suck a lot this year

New York Magazine reports that the F train is going to completely shut down for at least seven different weekends this year between Jay Street and Church Avenue, starting with the last two weekend of this month. The scheduled service cancellations are to make improvements to the line, which we might be able to enjoy in 2012. Amongst the scheduled weekend shutdowns are February 20, February 27, May 8, May 15, May 22, November 13, and November 20. Oh, and there’s no way to avoid the shuttle buses, because the G train will not run those weekends either.

The F train will completely shut down for at least seven different weekends this year in large stretches of trendy Brooklyn, between Jay Street-Borough Hall and Church Avenue. As happened for six weekends last year, commuters will be forced to cram into slow-moving shuttles that will cross Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Park Slope during those time periods. Even yoga instructors are rattled! “People are going to totally freak out,” yoga guru Laura Stryjewski told the Post. “Taking the shuttle is a royal pain.”
