The Brooklyn Paper reports on the disgusting act of vandalism, notably the torching of a jungle gym, at P.S. 29 over the weekend. They mention neighborhood speculation that a group of angry teen girls is behind this despicable act: Continue Reading →
Allegedly Taking Candy from Babies
The NYTimes reports that a Former PTA Treasurer at Brooklyn School Is Indicted in Theft of $100,000. Providence Hogan, former treasurer of the PS 29 PTA and who is also the owner of Providence Day Spa, allegedly took the money for personal expenses including rent and fertility treatments.
PS 29 is a highly regarded local school that offers many extracurricular activities funded through the PTA. To Cobble Hill parents, what do you think could have been provided with this extra $100,000?
76th Precinct Police Blotter 8/10/10
Here’s a tidbit from this week’s 76th Precinct’s Police Blotter:
Courier Life: Five teens robbed snatched a man’s iPhone inside the Carroll Street train station on Aug. 2.
The 37-year-old victim told cops that he was on the southbound platform under Smith and President streets at around noon when he was surrounded by five teens with bad intentions.
When one post-pubescent punk grabbed his phone, the victim wrestled with the underage thugs, to no avail.
But Transit cop Rene Soto was on the scene quicker than you can say “Steve Jobs” and arrested three of the five member crew, two aged 15, and the third aged 16-years-old.
Brooklyn Paper: Fireworks Cache Comes to Cobble Hill
The BP reports this morning that a huge cache of illegal fireworks nabbed on Ocean Avenue have made their way to the 76th Precinct. Read the full story here.
“Anything fireworks-related is a big deal — but we had no idea we’d come across this much,” said a police source, who invited us to the 76th Precinct in Cobble Hill to show off the stash, in hopes that it would deter folks from seeking out the contraband.
The suspect, 32-year-old Edguardo Diaz of Sheepshead Bay, faces criminal misdemeanor charges of dealing fireworks.
Police think Diaz purchased the nearly $5,000 worth of explosives in Pennsylvania – and that’s where your friendly correspondent is headed for the July 4th weekend. Do not fret, dear readers; I will not bring any of them back to New York.
And I will return with all my fingers.
I wonder if Acme has a Pennsylvania outlet…
Another Heist at Trader Joe’s
Courier Life reports on the latest crime at the Court Street Trader Joe’s:
Courier Life: A thief snatched a wallet from a woman’s pocket book while she shopped at the Court Street Trader Joe’s on June 11 — the latest in a series of purse snatchings at the popular grocery store.
The victim told cops that she had left her purse sitting in her shopping cart while she shopped at around 1 pm. When she went to check out, she realized that her wallet, containing an assortment of IDs, credit cards, and $100, was missing.
Last month, cops orchestrated a string at the sketchy grocery store that netted a thief. Upon hearing the news of the latest incident, a police source said, “We got to go back there again!”
Reefer Toting Trader Joe’s Purse Snatcher Nabbed
The Brooklyn Paper reports that a sting operation at the Court Street Trader Joe’s has resulted in at least one (alleged) scumbag being arrested:
Brooklyn Paper: According to police, two officers fanned out inside the store, with one officer and a sergeant remaining outside. One cop pretended to shop — and then drift away from her cart and the pocketbook on it — while the other officer kept watch from a distance.
At around 2:30 pm, a thief grabbed the purse — which contained $20 — and ran out of the store into an awaiting car.
But he didn’t get far. The inside officer had already radioed a description of the perp to the outside officer, who moved in quickly and arrested the suspect, who was also in possession of a small quantity of marijuana, which is not sold at the otherwise mellow supermarket.
“We have to wait for him to leave the store,” Corey said. “Otherwise, he could say, ‘I was just going to return it to the cashier.’ ”
Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places or the “B” is for “Boerum” Not “BelowJ”
The Brooklyn Paper reports that the 76th Precinct pulled off a sting called “Operation Losing Proposition” last Thursday (4/15). It’s purpose — bust “johns” looking for “action” on a “notorious” corner in Boerum Hill (ahem you might say it’s in Gowanus but that would have spoiled our headline…OK?).
But seriously folks, couldn’t the NYPD have come up with a better name? Our suggestion “Operation What’s the Opposite of Above Me” clearly didn’t make the cut. But we think that’s because only 25% of the busts were in the market for that particular service the report says. Perhaps “Operation 3 Nuts in Search of a Bolt” would have been better. Which family friendly name would you have given this buy and bust initiative?
Trader Joe’s on Atlantic Apparently a Sweet Spot for Thieves
Courier Life reports that a woman had her wallet stolen while shopping at Trader Joe’s (they spell it “Traitor“…. hello copy editing! Yeah, we should talk) on April 9 at 6:15pm. They add that this sort of crime has happened there before. So look out for skells, misfits, low-lifes and the like at the ol’ TJ’s.
Millman Responds to Alleged Hate Crime
Assembly member Joan Millman responded today to reports of an assault that happened last week near the corner of Luquer Street and Hamilton Avenue that sent the victim the hospital.
Last Tuesday, March 2, around 1 a.m. police found a 22-year-old man who was assaulted by five males while they uttered anti-gay slurs to him. He suffered lacerations to the back of the head and bruises to his face and was sent to the hospital in stable condition.
“I am outraged to hear of this hateful verbal and physical attack that took place in my Assembly District, and I extend my deepest sympathies to the victim,” Millman said. “I am confident that the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Unit will investigate this assault to the fullest of its abilities. Any person with information about this crime is urged to contact the NYPD’s 76th Precinct Detective Squad directly at 718-834-3221.”
