It Won’t be the End of the World

This in from Notify NYC:

Notification issued 11/14/11 at 12:00 PM. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be testing their Early Warning Sirens at the Brooklyn Piers tomorrow, November 15, 2011 between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. These sirens may also be heard in lower Manhattan. This is only a drill.

The notice doesn’t specify which “Brooklyn Piers,” but we’re presuming they include ones adjacent to Columbia Street and Red Hook.

Cruise Ship Terminal to Supply Shore Power, Ending Diesel Fumes from Idling Ships

Mayor Bloomberg will announce today an agreement among the Port Authority, as operator of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, the New York Power Authority, and Carnival Cruise Lines, operator of Queen Mary 2 and other ships using the Terminal, under which electric power will be supplied to ships while in port from the land-based distribution grid. This will end the practice of using the ships’ auxiliary diesel powered generators while docked in order to produce power, and will greatly reduce the amount of pollutants spewed into the local atmosphere. Tragedy on Columbia Street

A woman was struck and killed by a van while crossing Columbia Street Thursday:

New York Post: A Brooklyn woman was fatally struck by a commercial van yesterday as she was crossing a notoriously dangerous intersection during her morning walk to work.

The driver of the Dirusso Electrical Contracting van was inconsolable after hitting Caroline Turnage, 56, as she crossed Columbia Street at around 7:40 a.m.

The Post article doesn’t identify the particular intersection at which this tragedy occurred. Ms. Turnage lived elsewhere in Brooklyn and commuted by subway to Cobble Hill, then walked to her job as a receptionist at Time Moving & Storage, 158 Pioneer Street, in Red Hook.

Giant Closet Full of Awesome Stuff to Open in Red Hook

Christie’s Fine Art Storage Services will be opening a new facility in Red Hook this June.  It’s one of two new high security warehouses the auction company plans for this year.  The other will be in Singapore.

Art Daily: CFASS has entered into a 50-year-lease of the 235,000 square foot (about 22,000 sqm) facility in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. This iconic building, formerly known as the New York Dock Co., has been completely renovated to house a state-of-the-art, highly-secure storage facility. Top-of-the-line environmental controls, simultaneous on-site and remote monitoring by two independent security centers, and back-up power generators provide a reliable and safe environment for the care of art, antiques and collectibles. Located across from Governor’s Island, with views of both downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, the CFASS New York location is easily accessible from major transportation hubs. The stand-alone structure is constructed of fireproof concrete and steel, and is bounded by a secured perimeter with tightlycontrolled access and 24-hour security. Custom storage rooms range from 100 to 15,000 square feet, with expanded height clearance for large sculptures and works of art. CFASS New York is headed by Mr. Joel Weinberg, General Manager, CFASS New York.
