The battle over the issue of Charter Schools in NYC, has opened a new front in a proposal to create a school run by the the Success Academy in Cobble Hill. The decision to accept the proposal is the subject of a hearing tonight, as reported by the NY Daily News and the New York Times. Controversially, the hearing will be held in Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens. Adding further controversy, proposed charter school will be sharing a location with both Brooklyn School for Global Studies and the School for International Studies 284 Baltic Street. Is this a good idea for parents, children, and the neighborhood?
Brooklyn Paper on Sadie’s Kitchen but is it in Cobble Hill or Carroll Gardens?
The Brooklyn Paper writes about the newly opened Sadie’s Kitchen at 243 Degraw Street. The paper does create some “confusion” in that it identifies the establishment as being in both Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens.
Using our nifty color coded Cobble Hill or not Cobble Hill map, we’ve determined that Sadies is, in fact, in Cobble Hill. Thus making the Brooklyn Paper half right (insert snarky comment here). Continue Reading →

The national edition of Curbed takes a look at Cobble Hill’s Flavor Paper. While we don’t heart being called the “hinterlands” it’s great to see a local business get a big look like this: Continue Reading →
CHA Prexy Says Dumping of BQE Reno Plan is “Pathetic”
The NYS Department of Transportation trashed plans for a $280 renovation of a portion of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway this week. That announcement has community leaders here fuming.
“We were told by the state that the BQE was in danger of collapsing in the 80s,” CHA President Roy Sloane tells 1010 WINS. “It’s also pathetic that they put all these years and effort in, spent money on all sorts of designs and are now dropping it.”
The Only Success at Proposed Cobble Hill Charter School – Overcrowding?
The proposed charter school at 284 Baltic Street could end up being an overcrowded mess according to opinions expressed at a public meeting held Tuesday night. Earlier this week NY Assemblymember Joan Millman came out against the plan. Continue Reading →
Cobble Hill Charter School – “Meh?”
The NY Daily News reports on all that fuss around a charter school in Cobble Hill:
NY Daily News: Success Charter Network CEO Eva Moskowitz‘s plan to bring a new charter school to Brownstone Brooklyn is getting mixed reviews.
In recent weeks, Moskowitz has been pitching Success Academy Cobble Hill to the booming population of young families in Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Carroll Gardens using a slew of community meetings and flyers.
Network officials last night handed out flyers at the annual Halloween parade in Cobble Hill Park.
But the former councilwoman isn’t always getting the warm reception she wants for what would be SCN’s second school in an upper-middle class neighborhood.
An initial meeting held last week at a house on Bergen Street was filled with 18 receptive parents who wanted to learn more about the proposed school.
“You’ve got a lot of schools here that aren’t working for a lot of families,” Moskowitz told the group last Wednesday night. “We see our schools as identifying talent and nurturing that talent.”
Sol Moscot Coming to Cobble Hill
The Lower East Side’s legendary opticians Sol Moscot will be opening a branch in Cobble Hill. Sorta ironic – it’ll be next door to Book Court in the old Floral Photo space at 159 Court Street. So after all that reading in the dark or on the bus ruins your eyes you’ll be able to get a stylish pair of specs just steps away.

D-bag Dad in Cobble Hill – Annoying or Just Misunderstood?
We’ve received a dispatch from a reader who had a run-in with a sunglass wearing “D-bag Dad” at Ted and Honey this morning. While it’s not confirmed that the dude behind those Foster Grants was in fact the father of the child in question, it’s quite possible that he could be a d-bag.
Here’s the dispatch from our reader:
Dear D-bag Cobble Hill Dad: if you took your iPod off maybe you’d hear your kid screaming bloody murder. If you took your sunglasses off (we’re inside after all) and your face out of your ipad, maybe you’d see you’re blocking the door for me and my kid.
City Announces Plan That May Reduce Scale of Park Housing
Mayor Bloomberg announced this evening that city and state officials plan to sign an agreement tomorrow concerning the funding of Brooklyn Bridge Park that may result in smaller scale housing being built on park land, and may even eliminate the need for the two planned new buildings near the foot of Pier 6.
The New York Times: After months of uncertainty over the fate of the popular Brooklyn Bridge Park, city and state officials plan to sign an agreement on Tuesday that would allow limited private housing to be built there, to help pay an expected annual operating cost of $16 million.
The agreement ensures that the park, which now measures 20 acres, will be completed, eventually expanding to 85 acres on five disused piers along the East River. Continue Reading →
